Rivian R1T (2020)

Rivian R2 possibly spotted in the wild during a promotional photo or video shoot

Just yesterday Rivian brought us the first teaser video for its upcoming R2 SUV, which is becoming official on March 7, and today it already seems like an R2 was spotted out and about, 'in the wild' as it were, posing for cameras in either a photo or video promo shoot.

Do keep in mind that we can't vouch for the accuracy of the images here - this very well could be the R2, or maybe not. Still, it wouldn't be impossible for Rivian to set up a photo/video shoot of its upcoming model so close to its unveiling, and such a shoot taking place on the roof of a parking lot makes sense since access can more easily be restricted. As it turns out, however, people can still take pictures from more elevated positions even if they are further away than would be ideal.

The first image posted to the thread below made its way to Reddit first, and then a couple of more images were added on X (formerly Twitter) a few hours after that as you can see.

Rivian R2 is coming to Europe

Rivian is unveiling the R2 on March 7 at an event in California. The company has already started teasing the upcoming SUV which will be more affordable than its existing SUV, the R1S. We've also seen the R2 in some spy shots during a photo/video shoot a few days ago, and today we have a confirmation from Rivian itself that the R2 will be sold in Europe.

If you're wondering where in Europe, the UK is confirmed, as are Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

The smaller Rivian R2 is coming, and it’ll make it to Europe too

Electric truck and SUV maker releases a shadowy teaser image of its next model

Rivian is preparing to reveal its next model on 7 March, and from this initial teaser image it looks as though the design department hasn’t actually been that busy.

We already knew the next Rivian would be called 'R2', and we now know that it’ll get pretty much the same face as the larger R1T pickup and R1S SUV. If it ain’t broke, and all that.

We’re fans of that friendly Rivian lighting though, and it’s likely the rest of the R2 will take more cues from the R1S. Oh, and it’s an American SUV so although it’s smaller than the previous one, it’ll still look massive to us Yoo-ro-peans.

Although saying that, the R2 is actually going to make it over to Europe. Rivian says it has been “designed for a global market” and that although the launch event will just cover pricing and delivery timing for the US and Canada, we’ll find out more about deliveries on our shores soon.

Rivian is opening up its charging network to other EVs

Tesla's Supercharger network has been in the news a lot recently for opening up to EVs from other brands, and now Rivian has decided to follow suit. Rivian has its own charging network, called the Rivian Adventure Network, which at the moment comprises 400 fast chargers in 67 locations throughout the US.

All of these have so far been exclusive to owners of Rivian EVs, but that will change starting in the second half of this year. Rivian has announced the news through its most recent shareholder letter.

The company boasts that its chargers had an average uptime of 97% during the fourth quarter of 2023. The chargers are developed, designed, and manufactured in-house by Rivian.

Rivian R2 specs leak - is this the affordable EV we've been waiting for?

Rivian, the plucky EV startup that wowed the world with its adventure-ready electric truck and SUV, is about to pull the covers off its follow-up act. The R2, a smaller and more affordable electric SUV, has had its specs leaked just days before its official reveal. If these are true, Rivian could soon be a serious challenger in the highly competitive EV segment.

So, what tasty bits of information did this leak reveal? First off, the R2 is apparently targeting a roughly €43,800 starting price. That's a good chunk of change cheaper than the existing Rivian R1 models, putting it more squarely in competition with the mega-popular Tesla Model Y.

New Rivian R2 and surprise R3 revealed: is this its Tesla Model Y moment?

Smaller, more affordable electric SUVs land Stateside, coming to Europe... eventually

Has Rivian just had its Tesla Model Y moment? Its shareholders will certainly be hoping so, after the reveal of a pair of smaller, more affordable electric SUVs to sit beneath its flagship R1T and R1S models – the predictably-named R2 and R3. And yes, they will be sold in Europe… eventually.

Introduced by CEO RJ Scaringe in Rivian’s swanky new Laguna Beach ‘space’ (don’t call it a dealership), the R2 is the one we were all expecting to see. The R3 was a rare surprise. We’ll deal with R2 first – the first model on Rivian’s new midsize platform.

Shorter and narrower, but a little taller than the Tesla Model Y, prices will start from around $45,000 (a Model Y costs from $36,450 in the US) when deliveries kick off in the first half of 2026. There will be three versions to choose from – single, dual and tri-motor (two motors on the rear axle, one on the front) – with a claimed 0-60mph of under 3.0 seconds for the ‘tri’.

Battery details are to be confirmed, other than there’s more energy-dense chemistry, the pack is a structural element of the car and the range will be over 300-miles. A new ‘Perception Stack’ featuring 11 cameras, five radars and more computing power will give it “dramatically enhanced autonomous capabilities".
