Rivian stocks continue to tumble after Ford intends on selling 8 million shares

Things are not looking good for the American electric automaker after their stocks began to plummet after news emerged that Ford intends on selling 8 million shares.

The future of Rivian was filled with promise, with Ford owning a 12% stake in the Amazon-backed EV maker which translates to just over 100 million shares. According to sources of CNBC’s David Faber, the Blue Oval intends on offloading 8 million shares through Goldman Sachs. In addition to this, an unknown seller is reportedly selling between 13 – 15 million Rivian Shares which will be handled by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and are priced at $26.90 per share.

Ford’s departure of 8 million shares comes after both companies reportedly parted ways in terms of EV production with Ford CEO Jim Farley stated to be the source of the rift. When the news emerged last week, Rivian stocks began to plummet, dropping from $33,92 USD on ‎Wednesday, the 4th of May and hovering around the $20 mark at the time of this article.

Rivian Recalls R1T Over Airbags That Can Injure Children - Jalopnik

The recall, because of an issue with a sensor in the passenger seat, is the first in Rivian's short history.

Rivian is recalling 502 R1Ts because the front passenger airbag may not deactivate in the presence of a child or child seat, according to documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Rivian says it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.

Rivian has determined that on certain R1T vehicles, the front passenger seat may not deactivate the front passenger airbag as required if a child seat or child is in that seat.

In the event of a crash which deploys the front passenger airbag, a seat with this improper calibration may increase the risk of injury for any child or child seat occupant sitting in the seat.

We are contacting those with affected Rivian vehicles, and they will receive a passenger seat replacement free of charge at a Rivian service center.

In the meantime, infants and children should not be placed in the front passenger seat of affected Rivian vehicles until a front passenger seat replacement is complete.

This is, according to NHTSA data, Rivian’s first-ever recall, so welcome to the party, Rivian. Everyone knows, of course, that you’re not a real automaker until you do a recall.

Rivian ups production past 1,000 EVs per month

Rivian is meeting its production targets, making 1,400 vehicles from April until May 9. That's helping the company's aim to produce more than 3,000 cars in Q2 and 25,000 for the year. It managed 2,553 in Q1.

Rivian needs to be able to secure important supply chain parts to keep a consistent production in its plant in Normal, Illinois, and complete its new plant in Atlanta, Georgia.

Cumulatively, Rivian has built roughly 5,000 EVs and sold 2,147. However, it's gotten over 90,000 pre-orders, or around 3,500 per month, which far outweighs production.

Buyers aren't even deterred by the infamous price increase Rivian put into effect in March - there have been over 10,000 new pre-orders since, with an average price per car from those 10,000 at $93,000.

Rivian says it remains on track to produce 25,000 EVs by the end of 2022

Rivian began production of its vehicles in September of 2021 and more recently, the EV maker reached production output of 1,000 vehicles per month. This week, Rivian confirmed in a statement that it is still on track to produce 25,000 vehicles in 2022.

Rivian produced 4,401 vehicles during Q2 and delivered 4,467 EVs to customers during the same period. These numbers include both the Rivian R1T and R1S with no breakdown between the two models.

Last year, Rivian expected to manufacture 50,000 vehicles throughout 2022, but a severe battery shortage and ongoing global supply-chain delays have prompted Rivian to revise its guidance down to 25,000 vehicles for the year.

Deliveries begin of the electric SUV Rivian R1S

Rivian R1T has been reaching its customers for a few months now, although not in a huge number. Its SUV sibling is now joining it with first deliveries reported by happy - for now - customers.

R1S is an SUV version of R1T, it is shorter overall with a much shorter wheelbase - 121.1 inches against 135.8 inches. R1S is 200.8 inches long whereas R1T is 217.1 inches long. Towing capacity suffers as well with the R1S being able to tow “only” 7,700 lbs, the R1T masters it at 11,000 lbs.

A foot and a third is quite a difference between the cars but it's the R1S that wins in the interior department with a third row of seats making it a luxury people hauler. R1S wins in off-road specifications as well with a bigger departure angle, slightly better approach angle and a breakover angle better by 3 degrees. In some situations, smaller is better.

Doctor claims first Rivian-powered vasectomy

When a power cut hit a clinic in Austin, the patient didn’t want to reschedule. So the doctor roped in a Rivian R1T…

Well, um, this is unusual isn’t it? Car Twitter went into something of a frenzy this morning as it emerged that a doctor in Austin had used a Rivian R1T pick-up(presumably his) to help perform a vasectomy amid a power outage.

Christopher Yang MD, who is described as ‘a recovering tech geek turned physician’ on his employer’s website, said that his patient “didn’t want to reschedule” the appointment “cause he already had time off”.

And so enter the electric truck, which boasts a quartet of 120V sockets that can be used to power external electronic devices. We’re pretty sure Rivian’s designers mostly had camping gear in mind at the time, but hey, if the plug fits…

According to Yang the “procedure went great!”, and it’ll leave many people wondering just how far vehicle-to-grid technology can be pushed as electric vehicles become more prominent around the globe.

Rivian and Mercedes-Benz Partner Up To Tackle Euro Electric Van Market - MotorTrend

Each automaker plans to get a large electric van in a joint venture more focused on reducing common production costs.

Start-up all-electric automaker Rivian and the Mercedes-Benz Vans division have announced a new joint venture to build two new large electric commercial vans for the European market, with an "efficient" manufacturing setup using shared assembly lines in an all-new EV-dedicated factory.

Considering each company's new van will be built on separate platforms, with the stated goal of simplifying manufacturing for both parties, it makes the deal seem more like the two companies will be cosy roommates in their new European facility with as much shared overhead as possible.

The deal hasn't been finalized just yet, as the shared release states there's still some regulatory this-and-that and the final paperwork to be signed, but they must be confident it's a sure thing if they're already making announcements. (You've got to impress the shareholders!)

The new van production is set to begin "in a few years" in an "all-new electric-only production facility" that's located on a site already operated by Mercedes-Benz in "Central/Eastern Europe."

This would have been a great time for them to announce the factory would have a carbon-neutral footprint, or to clearly outline ethical resource acquisition for the raw materials that go into these new EVs, but there was no such detail at this time.
