Rivian forced to recall every electric vehicle including EDV Amazon vans

It may sound like it is bad news for Rivian, it certainly isn’t good news but the company is not playing the potential issues down and decided to issue full recall of every car it has manufactured so far. That means nearly 13,000 vehicles coming in for a full mechanical checkup.

The company has announced that it was made aware of seven reports where fasteners connecting the front upper control arm and steering knuckle weren’t tightened to the correct torque values. Although there were no issues reported as a result of these findings, the company has decided to play it safe and issued a full recall for every car manufactured so far.

Lucky for Rivian, it didn't make so many cars then. Still, nearly 13,000 of R1T, R1S and EDV Amazon vans will have to be inspected and if faults are found, they will need to be corrected. At 3 hours per car it can be as much as 39,000 working hours to rectify the fault, then there is the inconvenience for individual customers and service disruptions for Amazon.

 
Rivian adds Kneel Mode to R1T and R1S via OTA software update

The beauty of modern car platforms - not just electric - is the ability to getting new features with OTA software updates. While some manufacturers use it for changing interior light colors or introducing new “dings and bongs” for when the door opens, companies like Rivian take full advantage of the feature.

Rivian designed its trucks to be upgradable, the cars are just a platform with hardware capable of so much more - but it takes time to develop the software. If we waited for an electric car with every option and convenience available straight from the factory, the car would probably never leave the development stage.

Recent OTA update from Rivian is a great example of that, it introduces a very helpful feature called Kneel Mode. Simply put - the car drops down to 10 inches (25 cm) off the ground when it's parked. The car lowers its ride height by 1.4 inches or 35mm, making it so much easier to get in and out of the truck. It makes loading and unloading stuff from the back easy as child’s play.

It’s this time of the year again - SEMA starts this coming Tuesday and we are going to be treated to some of the wildest creations the automotive world has seen so far. Electric cars are not shying away from the limelight - quite the opposite, they are taking the center stage.

Optima Batteries enlisted help of Weistec Engineering and its EV focused subsidiary, the Direct Current Engineering (DCE) and together they came up with a pair of arguably the best overlanding electric vehicles - at least for now. They have chosen Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S and went to town with both of them.

There are very little technical details about the cars but the teaser images are enough to realize these aren’t show ponies - these are serious offroading tools capable of crossing deserts without an issue. What about range? Well, Optima, being a battery company and all, thought about that one as well.

Let’s start with the smallest member of the team but the most important one - Optima Power Station. Yes, Optima thought about electric car range, especially an electric car loaded up with a lot of equipment and driving in harsh environments - there is no chance of getting anywhere near the EPA range and there are no DC charging stations in the Sahara.

Hummer EV faces Rivian R1S EV in drag race and braking test

In an interesting new video, the guys over at The Fast Lane Truck put two of the most enticing off-road, performance SUVs to the test - the Hummer EV Pickup and the Rivian R1S. While hardly the most practical use for those two watching them participate in a 1/4 mile drag race was a real sight. Better yet the guys also did a braking distance test and an efficiency one, which would arguably matter far more to potential buyers.

In the drag race, the Hummer won by narrowest of margins thanks to its much better launch off the line. The Rivian managed to reach a higher top speed of 111mph (106 mph for the Hummer). In a 0-60 mph test, Rivian was also a tad faster with impressive 3.68 seconds, while the Hummer got to 60 mph in 4.16 seconds. Both are hugely impressive numbers for that sort of beasts, however.

It's interesting to note that there were several runs and the Hummer's performance deteriorated with each run, while the Rivian R1S was much more consistent recording pretty much identical scores.


 
Rivian R1S and R1T get range boost with latest software update

Rivian is scaling up its production and apparently is on track to hit the 25,000 vehicles goal this year. The company has updated its online configurator to reflect the ñatest changes in hardware and software that are affecting new vehicles leaving the factory. Good news is that the existing owners have access to the same improvements.

Up until now, the dual-motor and large battery pack models were offering 314 miles EPA in the R1T pickup and 316 miles in the R1S SUV (505 km and 508 km respectively). The latest software update from the company changes those numbers quite significantly.

The same dual-motor R1T is now showing EPA certified range of 328 miles or nearly 528 km, that’s an extra 14 miles - not bad for a couple lines of code. The R1S SUV gets an improved range of 321 miles which is only 5 miles more but those 5 miles can mean a difference between getting to a destination charger or being stuck on the side of the road.

The company confirmed before that the new software update will provide improved battery longevity and durability and will focus on improved regen braking. It’s impressive how current technology allows for development work to continue long after the vehicle goes on sale and how the EVs can improve over time.

 
Rivian to update R1T and R1S suspension with McLaren supplier

Rivian will update the suspension on both the R1S and R1T to the latest Monroe CVSA2/KInetic H2 solution from Tenneco. The company is supplying McLaren with its sophisticated racing setup and the updated solution for Rivian is meant to not only improve handling but reduce noise at the same time.

The CVSA2/Kinetic has been originally designed for sport and hypercar models but Tenneco has upgraded its components and made it available for off road vehicles as well - hence the H2 moniker. The system provides continuously controlled damping and removes the need for anti-roll bars by replacing them with hydraulic roll control.

No sway bars means less weight, less road noise and better control, in many situations it actually means better contact between the tire and the road. It means that vibrations from one wheel are not transferred to the other or to the vehicle itself making the ride smoother and much quieter.

 
Rivian R1S and R1T get a new Snow mode with the latest software update

Rivian recently added a boost in range for the R1S and R1T through a software update, and today the company is at it again. This time around, if you own an R1S or R1T, and install the latest update, you'll then magically have a brand new Snow mode to use.

This is exactly what it implies to be based on the name. It's designed for driving in snowy conditions, optimizing the vehicle's settings for that. It's also good for slush and ice, but only when on-road. If you want to go off-road, even if there's snow or ice over there, the company still recommends using the existing Off-Road mode for better results.

Snow mode introduces more relaxed brake and throttle responses, and reduces regenerative braking force in order to deliver more precise control on low-grip surfaces. It also comes with a more seamless transition to the Auto Hold function, which means you should expect more controlled stops when the roads are slippery.

Rivian to offer dual-motor models with 600 and 700 horsepower next year

Rivian currently offers the R1T Truck and R1S SUV with a quad-motor engine that generates 835 horsepower. However, the company is developing a dual-motor version that is expected to be released in the coming year. They have recently shared new details about this option.

Rivian has announced that its Dual-Motor AWD system for the R1T Truck and R1S SUV will be available next year, with two options available: a base version that can reach 600 horsepower and go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, or an upgraded version that reaches around 700 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. This is faster than the quad-motor version, which takes approximately three seconds to reach 60 mph.

According to information on the Rivian website, both versions of the dual-motor model will have a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. Customers will be able to choose between a standard battery pack that allows for a driving range of over 260 miles, or a larger pack that currently provides 328 miles of range on the quad-motor configuration. It is likely that the dual-motor model with the larger battery pack will have an even longer range on a single charge

Rivian is developing a larger battery pack for the R1T Truck that will offer more than 400 miles of range, but this has been delayed until at least 2024. The R1S SUV, being shorter in length, cannot accommodate the max battery pack. Additionally, Rivian has announced that it will no longer allow customers to pair the max battery with the quad-motor system, as stated in an email to reservation holders effective immediately.
