Hi,

Can I make a RJ11 to RJ45 cable and plug it straight into my pc from the Telkom wall socket?

I have a socket in the computer room and a socket in the living room. So want to put the router in the living room, and a bit lazy to climb into the roof to run a network cable through...

If it's possible, what's the right way to wire the plugs? I'm waiting with crimper in hand... And is it a bad idea lightning wise?

Bad idea. There's 50VDC on those wires

I'm sure you could try, I doubt that it would work though...

Do it!

Then report back with your findings and pics...for science! :D

Don't even need a rj11->rj45 cable, the rj11 plug fits on a rj45 socket.

Possible results of doing it.
1. fried network connector (best case for you)
2. fire (best case for us, please post pictures)

Why? What is your goal here?

The goal was to avoid pulling in a network cable from the living room to the computer room.

But after all the posts, sounds like that's a much better idea. Thanks guys!

Not sure what you are trying to do.

telkom-->(rj11)router(rj45)-->rj11-->rj11--(rj45)-->pc

If the cabling between upsatairs & downstairs is isolated & not connected to telkom, has 2-pairs (4 wires) you 'might' be able to get 10base-t to run over it but it's gonna be dodgy.

Best bet is to use that phone line as a draw wire to pull a proper cat5 cable through.

Rather get Ethernet over Power adapters. Might work for you, might not work for you.
