Roam Rage

Boqwana says Icasa cannot judge whether roaming fees are fair because it does not know what makes up the cost of providing the service.
That and they probably think Roam is a city it Italy

SA operators say they are at the mercy of their foreign counterparts when it comes to getting a good deal for their subscribers.

Considering how dearly they enjoy ripping us off, I am not eager to believe this story.

Its actually much cheaper to get a pay-as-you go sim card for a provider in the country you are going to.

Most times they are DIRT cheap, and then you pay normal fees. I spent over R10 000 in calls 2 years ago. Since then I have bought cards for russia, germany, australia, and Brazil. Total cost of all my trips since then has been about R700.00

The only call I usually make on my own home number is to change my voice mail to give my new international number, and then put the sim card away until I return home. So no matter how they regulate it, it will still be cheaper to buy a sim card where you are going

This is how it works: (or did last time I was there)

You are roaming in UK on Vodafones network.
Your buddy on vodafone contract calls you from the room next door.

Your buddy gets billed for international call.
You get billed for international call. + service fee from VF

Called the trombone effect and conn us into thinking the call is routed to SA and back.

Vodafone don't have the technologies to figure out you are both on the same network and even in the same cell my ass......

Probably sat down with Telkom one day and thought it was an excellent rip-off idea oppertunity!! :D

But if you call him you're paying just the local rate as there is no connection via SA.

What gets me is what prepaid has to pay for international calls? WHY?!

The other thing is if you are on a South African prepaid sim card you can not roam. This is just $h!t service because if you are for example on a UK prepaid sim, you are able to roam almost anywhere. Why doesn't our operators offer the same service! This means that if you are on prepaid in SA and want to go overseas you have to buy a sim card there in any case. It's time that they catch a wake up and start delivering world class service, they are charging us pretty much the same as international operators.

Cell C agrees with Boqwana’s view that liberalisation is the best way of bringing down prices. Vodacom, for its part, says the international roaming market is sufficiently competitive. “No regulatory intervention is required in SA,” it says in a statement in response to queries.

Yaaaah Vodacom... of course no regulator is needed... otherwise you would loose out on raping the people of this country for your shareholders (aka telkom)

Skype to the rescue - again.

when i was in europe this summer, i used my ex's t-mobile uk sim card in germany, france, belgium, spain and the netherlands.

i could have brought it back and used it here. it's a prepaid.

but vodacom prepaid could not roam. when i went to senegal last easter, i just bought a prepaid card there, and that was that.

(and, is this where i mention that you don't have to buy a prepaid/contract when you buy a phone ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD -- you can just buy the phone and be done with it?)
