Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV

Rolls-Royce Can't Keep Up With Demand For The Cullinan SUV

In a twist that literally everyone saw coming, Rolls-Royce is working at capacity to fulfill orders for its new gargantuan SUV the 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Sales keep rolling in to dealers, so much so that Rolls has had to increase its staff to 2000 total employees (up 200 from last year at this time) to deal with the uptick in order sheets.

With the new model having been teased since 2013 and finally hitting showrooms late last year, there has been a pent up demand for the high Roller, and it’s reaching critical mass, according to a report by Automotive News.

Rolls-Royce order bookings are backed up through the end of July right now, thanks in large part to Cullinan orders. Reportedly as many as half of Cullinan buyers are new to the Rolls brand. Rolls also says the Cullinan appeals better to women, who make up a larger percentage of buyer for the SUV model. The model is also drawing in a younger customer than traditionally seen in a Rolls.

2018 was a record year for Rolls production, but the Cullinan didn’t hit dealer showrooms until November. While some of that uptick was found following the 2017 launch of the Phantom, Cullinan has been a boon for the brand. It’s fair to assume that Rolls is headed for another banner year in 2019.

“Many customers that already drive a Dawn or a Phantom buy a second Rolls-Royce,” Martin Fritsches, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Americas told Automotive News.

Fritsches also stated that he expects the Cullinan to sell exceptionally well in Canada, where the brand currently has four dealerships. In 2018 Rolls of Canada sold exactly 100 cars, and Fritsches expects that number to exceed 150 this year.

To paraphrase Nicolas Cage’s seminal character Randall “Memphis” Raines from the astonishing year 2000 “Gone in 60 Seconds” cinematic masterpiece, “There are too many self-indulgent wieners in the world with too much bloody money.”

There is a zero percent chance that I would purchase this ridiculous poseur’s soft roader over any of the other amazing Rolls available. Buy a Wraith and have some fun, dammit.

Rolls-Royce struggling to keep up with Cullinan demand

Proving that taste is, indeed, acquired, Rolls-Royce has revealed that the waiting list for its massive Cullinan SUV has reached as long as five months. As a welcome result, the brand’s production facility in Goodwood, England has hired an additional 200 employees in order to meet demand.

Based on information sourced from Rolls-Royce America CEO Martin Fritsches by Automotive News, the Cullinan has to date introduced on a new younger, predominantly female clientele that appreciates the SUV’s proportions. In addition to this, current owners see the SUV as a complimentary product to their current collection. He also notes that Canada has shown interest in the Cullinan mainly because of its all terrain capabilities.

“Many customers that already drive a Dawn or a Phantom buy a second Rolls-Royce but this time it’s an SUV.” Fritsches confirms.

It’s worth noting that Rolls-Royce’s production plant for the Cullinan is currently a low volume facility and that despite this the brand was able to achieve record sales of 4 107 units globally in 2018.

Mansory Create Widebody Rolls-Royce Cullinan

Mansory do no exactly play with the run-of-the-mill cars. First its the Bugatti Chiron and now its one of the most expensive SUV’s in the world, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

It has been dubbed the Mansory Billionaire and it is a collaboration with the luxury label Billionaire (a German fashion brand).

Once again the Mansory changes are rather comprehensive starting with a redesigned lower front fascia with larger air intakes and a new front spoiler. The grille and lights remain the same but the front bonnet is new with a crease line running down the middle. The fenders get new air outlets and wheel arch extensions meet the new side skirts.

At the back you will notice a roof-mounted spoiler which is a carbon fibre add-on that literally sits on top of the factory unit. The redesigned boot lid spoiler is also finished in carbon fibre. Mansory’s finishing touch adds a rear bumper with quad exhaust pipes and new air outlets.

The tuner did give the British machine some performance gains too. It gets a new rear silencer and engine management tweaks which account for around 40 hp (30 kW) and 100 Nm of torque. The final figures are 610 hp (455 kW) and 950 Nm of torque, enough to break the 5 second mark on a sprint to 100 km/h and boost top speed to 280 km/h.

The paint finish is bespoke to Mansory and uses the Billionaire brand on the rear panel. Inside, the Billionaire branding is also evident and sits encased in crocodile leather which is available for the instrument panel and seats.

To wrap it up, it is fitted with a set of Type M23 rims in 24 inches with for both the front and rear axles.

13 of these limited edition Mansory models will be built at a price starting at € 785,000.

Rolls-Royce CEO: if demand increases we’ll just raise prices

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says the British firm has no plans to expand production at its Goodwood plant, candidly saying if demand increases further “we would just raise prices”.

Speaking to GoAuto, the 58-year-old promised the firm would retain a high level of exclusivity, despite increasing demand driven largely by the Cullinan (pictured above).

“We are not into volume, but I think if you sell 4 000 [units] – or when I joined nine years ago it was around a thousand; of course we added more product over the last year – I think 4 000 is still a minute number given the overall car business world, right?

“It can also be 5 000; that doesn’t make a difference. For me, what matters is what you experience here. Customer attention, customer care … that kind of ambience,” he told the Australian publication.

“We are not selling ‘cars’. It’s not a ‘car’ in our customers’ mind. This is a luxury good. Yes, it sits on four wheels, but nobody needs us to come from A to B … nobody. They have multiple cars in their garage, and for that reason you need to create that ambience of high and prestigious luxury and that’s the reason why we are interested in high-end pricing [and] bespoke capabilities, which is a big part of the brand so that every customer can really build his own masterpiece.

“Together with our clients that’s the philosophy we have at Rolls-Royce. And it’s not a big difference if it is 4 000 or 5 000 or whatever.”

Müller-Ötvös added there was “no chance” Rolls-Royce would increase production at its headquarters, before hinting the BMW-backed company wouldn’t build vehicles outside of the United Kingdom, either.

“There is no chance in any way to expand production in Goodwood because we are sitting in an area of natural beauty and it’s an inbuilt guarantee for exclusivity. If we would see even higher demands, then we would just raise prices.

“I also think Rolls-Royce belongs to Britain. Full stop. Whatever comes … it’s part of the British culture.”

Rolls-Royce Cullinan Delivered At The Cullinan Mine In South Africa

For those who don’t know, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV got it’s name from a town right here in South Africa, where the Cullinan Diamond was discovered. The diamond weighed 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g) and was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sandton recently had the privelage of a world first Cullinan delivery right inside the mine.

“Here at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Sandton, we are constantly striving to surprise and delight our clients. We want their experience to be effortless and exceptional. That is how we came up with the idea of delivering the Cullinan to our Rolls-Royce client in Cullinan at the mine where the renowned Cullinan diamond was discovered” explains GM Rolls-Royce Sandton, Marek Letowt.

The new owner was treated to a world class ‘delivery’ which included a tour of the McHardy House Museum*, a visit to the Diamond Room Museum and the grand finale was a surprise reveal of the owners Cullinan atop the highest point in the working mine.

That currently makes this Cullinan owner the only one in the world to have taken delivery of the super-luxury SUV in Cullinan and also the first to drive it right in the Cullinan Mine.

“From the moment we heard about The Cullinan we knew we had to create history for our owners, so we started working closely with the management at Petra Diamond’s Premier mine in Cullinan. Every-one has been as excited and motivated as we have been to make this possible – we are so grateful for this” states Letowt “Our customer was literally speechless and has assured us that he will never forget this amazing experience and has no doubt that it will be a hard task to beat this car handover”.

South Africa’s allocation of Cullinan’s has been snapped up for 2019 and orders for next year are already being taken.

We Might See A Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge

If you are familiar with the Black Badge moniker at Rolls-Royce, then you know exactly what this article is all about but for those who don’t Black Badge means a few things. Apart from having black accents here and there along with a black Spirit of Ecstasy, the Black Badge models also come with more power and better dynamics and it sounds like the Cullinan SUV may be headed for this treatment.

The current Cullinan packs a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 developed by BMW, capable of delivering 563 hp (420 kW) and 850 Nm of torque to all four corners of the car. That’s enough to send the large SUV to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, an impressive feat already.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan Is Too Small

Recently, I pulled up to a hotel after a long, regrettable four-hour drive across the barren and highway-ridden land that is much of the state of Texas. Out front sat a slate-gray SUV, appropriately positioned for photos from passerby as soon as they noticed the emblem up front and confirmed its authenticity on Google.

“Is that...?” I asked myself, squinting and reaching up to make sure my glasses were on. “No. It can’t be. I must be imagining things.”

But in my heart, I knew it was the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. There was nothing else it could be. It was just so very, disappointingly small. I didn’t want to believe it.

“Cool, right?” a guy outside asked me. I was too dumbfounded to answer.

The Cullinan has been around for just over a year now, filling the “SUV” void in the Rolls-Royce lineup with twin-turbocharged V12 extravagance and a rating of 563 horsepower. Rolls has also apparently been struggling to keep up with demand for the SUV, with order books backed up for months earlier this year.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan gains Black Badge variant

Super-luxury SUV gets black accents and more power to appeal to “more adventurous” clients

Rolls-Royce has introduced a Black Badge version of the Cullinan, giving the super-luxury SUV a gloss black coat of paint.

The British brand's Spirit of Ecstacy receives a black accent, for the first time encompassing the mascot’s mounting plate. In addition, the usually chrome front grille surround, side frame finishers, boot handle, boot trim, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes also gain a darker hue. The Black Badge rolls on new 22in forged alloy wheels, while the brake callipers are gloss red.

The powertrain is boosted from the standard Cullinan; the 6.75-litre V12 engine now delivers 592bhp and 664lb ft, transmitted through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, rather than 563bhp and 627lb ft. Rolls-Royce hasn’t released performance or economy figures for the model, however.

The Cullinan Black Badge joins existing variants of the Wraith, Ghost and Dawn. The new black-trimmed Cullinan is the darkest model yet in the Black Badge family.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge Revealed With 600 HP (447 KW)

It was only a matter of time until the Rolls-Royce Cullinan received the Black Badge treatment and here we have it sporting more power and a new expression.

The Black Badge changes are more noticeable on the exterior thanks to a darkened Spirit of Ecstasy badge finished in high-gloss black chrome, and matching darkened chrome on surfaces like the front grille surround, side frame finishers, and exhaust top off the look. It also sports some new 22-inch wheels finished in a darkened silver-and-black two-tone finish. Those wheels wrap around giant rotors clamped down on by red brake calipers which is a first for Rolls-Royce.

Black accents make their way into the cabin as well and there is also a luxury carbon fibre finish on the dash and center console.
