Rougeware SSD drives

Got it in an unboxed deal from TAL in Nov 2023 so 6 month warranty had expired when it died.

It only had a few minutes power on time when I got it so was basically new.
Bad luck. I bought a bunch of stuff unboxed. I wonder what happened to unboxed deals? I don't see it anymore.
 
Had since Feb 2023. I use it as a small OS drive, but I offload Videos and Downloads folder, as well as temp folders to a spinning drive to keep wear down.

4% wear over ~2 years, 21 TB written.

As Rory Sutherland says the benefit of buying brand name is to not be assured that the device is good, it's to be assured that the device is not terrible.

I had two SSDs fail on me. Years ago an Intel and a few years later an OWC (but long after warranty).
 
Had a 128GB nx100s OS drive died on me after a year. But i can still use it via usb enclosure, go figure.

Bios pick it up as some long random number and not as rogueware. Windows & linux can't see it, . Via usb its picked up correct.
 
Something about the brand name on these drives put me off them. Can quite put my finger on it

Always prefferd to go WD Blue. But now with crazy pricing I'm trying Kioxia. Holding thumbs I don't regret it.
 
I was looking at a WD Blue 1TB. The other brands are more than 2 times as expensive. I don't know what that says but if don't pull the trigger I might not get the same chance in the next few years.

What puts me off is some reddit reviews saying they use cheap components with some failing within months. I know SSDs are generally more reliable and reddit is hardly a reliable source attracting the negativity. But what is strange is some reports saying that as a startup system drive it's just as slow as a spindle disk which to me is quite a strange claim to make.

I had a WD 512gb sata ssd and it was in no way slower than a spinning disc.
Was it as fast as my nvme? No but we're talking ms really

I see when it comes to speed perception heavily affects people's experience. Independent benchmarks don't nearly indicate the experiences could be true. One thing that is noted is that there's no internal cache but cache would not affect an SSD at startup in any case so they're all on equal footing there.

I've had a few of each and the jump from mechanical to SSD is big and very noticible. I can't say that the same is true for NVME though. Is it faster that SSD yes; is it measurably faster, also yes. Does it affect general PC use as much as the mechanical to SSD I don't believe it does.

Look when it comes closer to full it might get slower still or when it's nearing its end. But it'll still be faster than a hdd, especially on boot.
 
Maybe I should just pull the trigger. Even if it gets me through 2 years with the price of memory increasing it might be worth it.

WD Blue is usually good value for money IMO but the market is crazy atm. I recently bought 2x Kioxia SSD Exceria Plus G3 PCIe 4.0 NVMe - 1 TB for R1400 (per drive). They are now selling for R1900 on the same listing (Takealot) and 2k at wootware.

Yeah that was my impression. Most 1TB SSDs now go for ~R2400 so the WD dropping in price is a steal right now.
 
I'm pretty damn glad I stopped selling Rogueware. Good luck with support going forward, their website no longer exists and the disti can no longer assist with software for the peripherals or firmware for the drives.
 
My second 1TB Rogueware failed today, this 1 had a hard life though as it was in my NVR :laugh:
Can't find the invoice but I think it is also about a year old.

It seems to have been integrated into the site as a supplier most likely because it was abused. So no longer searchable as a separate category but now and again you come across something that lists the supplier as unboxed.

SATA protocol is much slower and the SSDs / controllers included will be slower. NVME uses a much faster transfer protocol requiring more robust controllers and NAND. Both SATA SSD and NVME SSD use NAND memory.

Except for M.2 is sata unless NVMe is specified. you dont want SATA m.2 you want and need NVMe m.2

I am using idioms commonly used in the industry not trying to be technically accurate.

NVME is usually faster but doesn't have to be. Just like SATA HDD wasn't faster than IDE HDD. It still rings true that NVME isn't noticeably faster unless you're working on large amounts of data or using it for RAM.
