Thought I'd create a new thread :/

Basically, ADSL was installed Wednesday and the opened the block on my line - so I came and I had ADSL.

Did speed tests, browsed - everything was great. Decided to put the router it its permanent place and unplugged it to move it. When I plugged it back, it won't work ... Just a RED light for Internet.

I'm pretty sure the only thing I did before was my username/password - but is there anything else I should do? Service name? PPPoE Session 2? DNS server? Anything?

I notice it says ADSL modem connected (1024 and 507). I also noticed that if reset everything (guest account) the Internet light in green ... Its when I change it to my account.

Btw - anyway to change that password?

There's 2 connections that happen. The physical connection to the exchange (what you see synced at 1024/507) and the actual ISP connection (which requires your username and password)

Your router (unknown) has to have some form of logging on it or indication as to what is actually wrong when logged into it's web interface. My guess would be that something changed between you moving it to it's resting place. Could be the actual line (not all phone line connection points are activated for ADSL) or it could be that you just have a crap router that forgets it's settings each time it's powered off (could it be one of the original Telkom modems perhaps? lol) or you just not typing in your ISP account information correctly (the router should tell you that somewhere)

I am guessing you didn't follow the full save procedure, some of those gateway devices need you to apply, accept and then save/reboot for the settings to be permanent - the billion from Telkom is one of those. What device do yo have?

I also suggest a quick google for the user manual, it will make your life easier:)

That's weird, you have to apply the settings... then you can browse and everything works fine, but to save it permanently you have to go someplace else and save/reboot the router? Dear lord Billion is kak

Dude, just buy a Netgear DG384G (I believe Telkom retails them now including terrible correction) and ****in' plug'n'play

Chatted to the technical guy at work ...

He said that because the initial default guest@telkom works correctly (ie I get a DNS, IP and the light is green) indicates that the physical line is actually working correctly.

He then took my own username/password and tried it on an ADSL line/router we have at work - and it didn't work (his kept saying couldn't connect)

He said that indicates something is at fault with my account rather than the line itself?

Tonight I'm going ask a kind MyBB person to lend me a username/password to try - and if that works, it's 100% something with my own account. Is that right?

EDIT : I got the Netgear N300 (or DG2200 or something) .... seems a decent router

Hey Dolby

Maybe try and sign-up for a free Afrihost 1GB account ... http://www.afrihost.com/site/page/free_1gb_adsl_account_signup

EDIT: Oops... ignore my Afrihost post... they are out of test accounts.

PM me if you still need an account to test tonight... I suspect that most ADSL accounts are linked to the phone number of the subscriber.

You may have to perhaps just get the cheapest AXXESS voucher if all else fails and test with that.

I'm glad it is not mine, I am obs tech support to a few friends, thought she was doing something silly - figured out it was the billion returning to old settings every time it was rebooted.

Dolby - maybe just get an Afrihost prepaid 1GB anyway, useful later too. If you have an FNB account you get a 1GB account from them free which is useful for this type stuff as well. I think WA and Cybersmart also have 1-3GB free promos, give them a shout.
