Hey Guys,

I am going to get a Gigabit Hub and a Router.

I was thinking of going for a D-Link DI-604 Router.

and connecting that to a D-Link DGS-1008D 8-Port Gigabit Switch.

Then all my PC's plug into the switch.

Will this work.

How good is the D-Link stuff anyone using this paticular Boardband Router?

netgear or linksys is teh bomb - that's what I can recommend.

also stay teh hell away from Fujitsu-Siemens. That's atrocious.

The Wi-Fi 54g Netgear is aparrently great - but if you're just going for wired connectivity, then any linksys or netgear will be fine, as long as it is cost effective for you.

to save money, you could get an integrated hub and router. I see two problems arising from this: You'll only get four or so ports, and chances are that a router/switch with 1gigabit ports are rare or still in development.

good luck!

I have my UTD connected to a D-linkDi604 which is connected to a Linksys WRT54G (wireless) and also a 3Com 100mbs switch .
The Linksys is the most user friendly i have found the Dlink sometimes wont respond and i have to do a "reset" to be able to change settings.
The Linksys WRT54G have great "upgrade" software to flash the system which can give you more Tx power. IMO go with the Linksys (part of Cisco Systems).. :D

Why the heck Gigabit for a home network running from a iBurst connection ???

I have successfully linked the iburst modem into a 100mb switch.

Then enabled sharing from one pc on it.

This is a cheaper alternative but expect problems from it.

if say pc A wants to send info to internet it would send through router to pc B(ics server) which would then send back through router to iburst modem->internet.

This long procedure causes a bit of lag and with my orignally pathetic speeds (without ics) it is inpractical.

But you can give it a shot if your speeds are good enough.

Remember to set your mtus on all pcs though otherwise it doesn't work at all.

i've got d-link 704up gateway connected to planet 1gb switch. works like a charm :)

I'm running a Linksys WRT54G router with an SMC-EZ6508TX 8 port hub/switch and it's working pretty well. Don't forget you may need a cross-over cable between your router and hub ;)

Gigabit nework for the speed of copying to pc's.

The bottleneck is not with the network but rather the slow SATA/IDE drive and bus interface found on PC's.
