So I found an old router and decided to flash it with RouterTech firmware. My aim is to connect it to my main (ADSL) router so that I can create a secure tunnel and connect to it over the internet.

Firstly, because its more secure when connecting to it via wifi in public places and secondly so I can connect to it via SSH from work and redirect all my traffic through it because I recently found out my work logs pretty much all your internet activity. Also half the damn internet is blocked from work :p

For those who want to give it a shot, the router is one of those el-cheapo Telkom DuoPlus 300WR routers.

At first I battled for over two hours to get it to flash the firmware via the web GUI, but every time it would boot back into the old firmware.

I finally realised that this damn thing is a rebranded Solwise SAR-605EW, but couldn't find the orignal firmware on Solwise's site.

I then noticed an Australian company rebranded the same router as Aztech. So I downloaded the firmware from there and flashed it. So, now I got past the first hurdle.

Then, still using the web GUI, I battled for a further what seemed like eternity to get it to complete the flashing of the RouterTech firmware. I finally managed to get it right using an app, connect via telnet and flashing it that way (actually I had to con the app to think that I am repairing the image)

So now I have the firmware installed and all looked great. This was at 23:30 last night, so I went to bed. This morning when I got up I fiddled with it for about 30 minutes, but got frustrated because it didn't save the IP I want to assign to it.

I want to assign it 10.0.0.20, 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 10.0.0.2 (my main router), but after I save the config and restart it reverts back to 192.168.1.1.

Anybody went through this before?
