Hi people,

I recently moved to Gauteng, Roodepoort to be more specific, and my car is nearly due for it's service. Do any of you perhaps know of a service centre that I can take my car to, not everyone's willing to work on the car.

Thanks

Rover, it's over :D

Sorry could not help it. It's a car so any mechanic should be able to work on it.

Yeah yeah, I know but I love this car. That's also why I don't want to put her in the hands of just "any" mechanic. That and not a lot of places know where to source parts for the car, most of the time I just imported the parts myself. But this is JHB, there should be at least one place that has a little more "know how" when it comes to Rovers.

Ouch... I can't recall when last I even saw a Rover 75 on the road... :/

Beyond asking the chappie who used to work on your car down in Cape Town whether he can suggest someone up here in Jo'burg, I don't know what to suggest. I will wish you luck though.

What type of parts? Parts for a engine service you should be able to get from most places I reccon seeing plugs/filters etc are used across brands.

Hehe, I actually moved from a town located in the Free State... :-P

Most of the parts are available here and if I need to then I'll source parts from the UK, I have done this before. I am actually looking for a place with the necessary equipment to reset her oil service and inspections service indicators.

I've considered buying the unit, but there must be at least one place in Johannesburg that can do this for me... :-/

I have a MG. Sadly the only place in Jhb really is as above, Proton Edenvale. Pearl Auto in Bryanston were looking after the MG's, Rovers etc...but proton have now taken over this. I have not used Proton though. I have been taking my car to EmGee Workshop in Randburg...but go their with caution! I have had such issues with that place. Im not mechanic, but a few times I have pin pointed an issue where they say it was something else. After arguing with them...they eventually figure out Im right. So ja...I have actually give up on this place, will be going to Proton from now on. The amount of cash saved by not going to a dealer is just not worth all the effort...and having to take my car back so many frickin times to get it sorted.

Man I wish I had the budget for a new car. Guess a new house is a better investment than a new car. Oh well :p

Hi guys, thanks for the advice, I'm going to give the Proton people a call because I'm stuck with another problem.

I decided to have my car serviced at the Moto Lube garage in Fouways, one of their employees came from the UK and knows the Rover a bit. I did a major + cambelt + brakes service (ouch) and everything looked good, but as I stopped in my driveway last night, after collecting the car, I noticed steam coming out from under the bonnet. It turns out that the radiator inlet elbow pipe broke.

Now they say that they can't source the part for me and that I'll have to order it from the UK, the problem is that I was planning to attend my father's 50th birthday this weekend and now I'm sitting without transport. :(

Do any of you perhaps know of a generic part that can be used?

Thanks

...I wanted to upload some pictures, but it keeps on saying "undefined" after uploading them... any ideas?

Dunno, upload here so long and provide us with the links http://tinypic.com/

What is the pipe made of, plastic, aluminium, steel? Post a clear picture of the break here.

It's a long shot but maybe give Silverton Radiators a call http://www.silvertonradiators.co.za/

Also give these guys a call http://www.magnettemotors.co.za/wmenu.php as I see they are stripping a 75 just does'nt say which year.

Alternatively you can have another part made up at a machine shop.

Hi,

Here is a picture of the pipe, it's made out of hard plastic... (sorry for the low quality, I don't have the pipe with me now, so can't take a better picture)

I've managed to find a place in Witbank (yeah ) that's willing to make a metal replacement part for me, but they'll let me know tomorrow afternoon.

I spoke to the guys from Silverton Radiators, they can't help me. I emailed the guys from MagnetteMotors about 5 minutes ago, if they do have a Rover with the same parts, I might just stock up :p

Thanks for your advice, will let you know what happens.

Ok, so yesterday someone from MagnetteMotors mailed me back and asked for more details, but I haven't heard from them since.

The guys in Witbank said that making a replacement part won't be hard at all, but I don't know when it's going to be finished... I really don't understand why it should take this long... :-/

You could probably fix that by glueing the broken piece back on and then epoxying a metal plate on the back of it with holes for the screws. Better to get a replacement or part made up seeing you don't want the cooling system failing on the road.

I actually suggested that to the mechanic, but he highly recommends that I DO NOT do that.

BTW, this whole mess made me a bit negative because I had to borrow a vehicle. At one stage I even played with the idea of selling the car, but she's too special... :o ...so, I'm going to buy a bike. I'm looking at a second had Suzuki SV650, any thoughts / recommendations?

Stay of the roads, people feel nothing for you and on a bike you are not gonna take a prang as well as in a car. Just the other day some biatch reversed out of her driveway without looking and took some laaitie on his bike out.

I'm not helping I know but I promised myself I will never buy a road bike even though I've had offroad bikes.

Yes, I know that it can be quite dangerous and to be honest, I’ve also just had off-road bikes, so I have absolutely no Johannesburg rush hour traffic experience on two wheels. But that is actually one of the reasons that I’m considering this, I love adrenaline.

Looooove the SV650, have heard nothing but good things about it. Looked at this bike a while bask...solid as a rock in terms of engine.

Yes, I've done a lot of reading and the people love that bike.

Ok, so the steel pipe has been made and they're also sending me a plastic one (I have no idea why). They couldn't find a courier that's willing to drop it off tomorrow, so I'll only get it on Monday... guess I'll be playing a lot of games this weekend.

Now I'm pi$$ed off...

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the twist...

http://www.hellopeter.com/motolube/complaints/missing-part-unacceptable-609624

"Long story short, I took my car to Motolube Fourways for a major service, timing belt service and a few other little things & I received it back the same day, which I think was quite quick, but then the problems started.

When I arrived at home I noticed steam coming out from under the bonnet & after checking I found that the radiator inlet pipe was broken, I phoned Motolube the next morning and they said that the mechanic didn’t work anywhere near that pipe & that sometimes they just break. Although this was a big coincidence, I hesitantly accepted this & managed to find a replacement after a week of searching, Motolube was unable to find one.

The ETA for the pipe is tomorrow morning, so I decided just to make sure that everything is ready, but then I noticed that the air filter cover is loose, I was shocked when I opened it & found that THE AIR FILTER WAS MISSING. That means I drove about 20km to my house without an air filter, I'm too scared to drive now because I don’t know whether any dirt has been sucked into the engine.

After paying R 8,641.01 for a service, one would expect to get the car back in a working condition and now it's starting to interfere with my work."

...at least their response time on the HelloPeter complaint was quite impressive, now I just hope that their solution will be equally impressive.
