It could well be that I a missing something here, but the payment for a licence disc has never been a concern for me. I have long been able to wander into a post office, pay my money, and walk out with a disc.
The addition of online payments will allow users to renew their vehicle or driver's licences without visiting a driver's licence testing centre (DLTC).
One still has to visit the DLTC in order to queue to submit the form and - minimally - have one's fingerprints taken for the umpteenth time.

Though, granted, one will (in theory, at least) no longer need to visit the DLTC a second time in order to collect one's driver's licence.

So, what's new ?

My personal take is that the system is strictly for the benefit of the related government departments in that they will receive the cash - inflated by the additional charges for "services rendered" - in advance and [hopefully] neatly balanced, thereby [even more hopefully] cutting down on the losses due to fraud.

And that it will do very little - if anything - for the queues ....

"Motorists will be able to renew and pay the prescribed card renewal fee online before they present themselves at a DLTC for fingerprints, photos and eye tests.
The transaction fee for this service will also be R72, while the booking itself will cost R22.
"

So it's useless then.
Pay more money so you can pay the money for the same process.
K@k slim.

Hang on. If I have to go in and do the eye test and fingerprints I might as well pay while I'm there and save the R72.00 'service fee'. Where's the benefit in this to me the public?

The last time I renewed my drivers license, it took about 15 minutes from me walking in to having my eye test and finger prints done. It then took another 45 minutes standing in line waiting to pay. I was at the front of the line the whole time. The person doing the payments was on a tea break. When they came off the tea break, they sat down infront of me and started counting pieces of blank paper for the printer and just ignored me. Then she got up and wandered off again. By the time she begrudgingly started helping people, there were about 30 people in the queue waiting to pay.

The benefit to the public? I won't have to deal with people like that again.

True, for me the payments was done after and took over an hour of shuffle shuffle on benches.

But.

If you are renewing a Drivers license, why the need for fingerprints? Why not just get a optometry test and submit the payment online? Then have the card delivered?

I mean ffs, we deliver credit cards etc so proof of identity is already baked in.

Haven't checked it out, but I assume one needs to register with an email address.

Rtmc then has profiles with confirmed email addresses with vehicle info.

Expect a bill to be passed to allow legal delivery of fines via email.

I tried to pay for my license online. It expired on 31 January 2022, I applied on 01 February. I dont think their system is set up too well. As the license had expired I was informed that an admin would contact me to let me know if there were any further costs etc. A few days later, I received approval for my application and was informed I could go and pay. I did this a few days back, paid my R606. Now today, I get a message from them rejecting my application as 'Outdated or Not certified' How the fudge do you go form approving and accepting payment to rejecting it outright??? Do they not know about the 21 day grace period??? I think I will stick to standing in the queue once and if I get my money back.
