New speed limits for South Africa

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has been silent on its plans to lower speed limits across the board by 10km/h in South Africa.

It first proposed the move in February 2022 during a presentation before the Portfolio Committee on Transport. The move would see South Africa's 60km/h residential speed limit dropped to 50km/h and highway speed limits reduced to 110km/h.

So ... how much is this gonna cost tax payers, for the RTMC to go around and print / make new and distribute signs?

Won't change anything.

Active policing is the only way you will clean up our roads.

The RTMC said the campaign would focus on areas with high levels of conflict between vulnerable users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, and motor vehicles.

Perhaps start by telling the two d-bag cyclists I had to deal with yesterday morning that riding two abreast in a single lane is asking for an incident. I had to move over into oncoming traffic to pass the two entitled d-bags. Also, perhaps build pedestrian bridges across the N3 so people from Alex are not walking on the fvcking highway. In general teach pedestrians that sidewalks are for people and the street is for cars.

It's naive believing that speed doesn't kill in SA. The roads are so bad now that lowering the speed limit might actually save lives.

Speed is a problem, yes, but without active policing it won't change much.

What good is lowering the speed limit by 10 km/h when taxis ignore sop streets and traffic lights? Hitting a taxi after it skipped a light at 50 km/h or 60 km/h makes no difference. Still an accident.

And it isn't just taxis anymore, if we are honest. Even average Joes are starting to just take chances at intersections.

This is just a tax on our time. Nothing more, nothing less. By my basic calculations my travel time will increase by about 3 hours a month if they do this.

In my younger years we used to regularly visit my aunt that was right next to a main road with a robot. The amount and severity of the accidents that we saw weekend after weekend is scary. Even just pulling away at an intersection (so way below 60), and coming into contact with a bicycle or pedestrian can kill.

Money making opportunity from fines.

This is all it is yes. My exit from home in the morning is an 80km/h zone, absolutely no one drive down here at 80, most are doing over 100km/h. Bringing the limit down will only make the fines bigger, people won't magically now start drive at 70.

Fsck off how much longer are road journeys going to take with trucks hogging the fast lane traveling at 85kmh trying to overtake a convoy of trucks traveling at 80kmh?

It was bad enough when they travelled at 90kmh

I'm pretty they have been going on about do this for ages, long before 2022

Most trucks are already required to adhere to a 80kph speed limit.
