Hey guys,

Given that the launch of the new RTX GPU series was last night and 17 September being the date it will be "available", when do you guys think it will be available in South Africa and what price do you think we'll get it at? I know the 3080 is priced at $699 but I'm quite certain it will be priced higher here.

Do you guys think the founders edition will be available here and if so how much do you think it will be?

Also please let me know your thoughts on the RTX 3080.

Thanks in advance

I am not purchasing anything until imports stabalise and the Rand recovers to a more desirable level. I think the 'pandemic' will still be around until March next year.

I have already seen some imports double in price.

Until then the 3080 is a SA wet dream. It will still sell though. We have many rich kids.

Some people use the *24 method. $699 * 24 = R16,776. Not sure exactly how this came about but seems to be a thing.

Essentially, you can take cost price * exchange rate * VAT + 10% and you may have a reasonable figure.

$699 * 16.72 = R11,686.51
+ 15% VAT = R13, 439.49
+10% (duties etc) = R14,783.44

So you're likely looking at R14,000-R16,000

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

I have also seen prices go up to almost double the price. I'm unable to get stock of the case I want too, the Lian Li 011 Dynamic is almost 50% more than it was pre-lockdown.

I'm hoping the RTX 3080 is not more than 18k. The founders edition looks sexy but I'm sure it will be much more expensive.

Well. Just looking at Amazon. If I order a 650 dollar GPU. Bringing it to sa comes to R14k.

Honestly **** the local stores.

Guess you will have to wait forever for those RTX 30 cards to become more affordable in SA. Rand is ****. It's permanent. Get used to it lad

You forgot the saffe seller's ridiculous markup part

0% Duties on graphics cards or similar electronics.

But you can add on transport or shipping if you planning to import $40 - $70.

For 4k, it's a huge improvement...less so for 1440p high refresh.

Cost per frame is way way better than Turing though it's still worse value objectively than AMD's 5700 cards at lower resolutions than 4k.

All in all, there's a gap for a gaming-focused product from AMD - Ampere looks a bit like a data centre architecture that's brute forcing gaming rather similar, ironically, to Radeon VII.

This release is a little weird. I can do with an upgrade considering Ray tracing is now becoming a thing and I'm starting to see lots of struggling to even run 1080p. Issue now is, Locally the pricing is bad enough for me to have to consider importing. Importing can take long, plus VAT, Tax etc becomes an issue. Leaves me at the point of having to choose. Xbox Series X or GPU upgrade. I barely play games these days however so it becomes a bit more tricky buying a GPU/Console if I'm barely playing games.

That's the price of the reference card, you'll need to add another 1-3K depending on the OEM

I feel you but just remember when you import yourself then you take on all the risk , if that card is faulty then you will have to send it back to the supplier you purchased it from to get your warranty , shipping costs back and forth.

Like everything in life , more risk more reward.

Few local supplier is not honoring local warranty they do send it back at there expense, but really long waiting times.

My msi card took 6 months last year with tvr.

My evga power supply is going take 3-6 months corex told me.

This is all via local suppliers.

So all the hype of a launch and no-one I asked had seen one store with stock.
The quickest change from "notify me" to "out of stock" in history.

To be expected...first run with minimal stock at about RRP. The real prices kick in later...just like the 2080 Ti was announced as a $999 card, always sold at $1200.
