My wife just told me her friend heard on the news that BBM/BIS is going to be cut down in South Africa. How false is this or how true is this?

Because I'm currently having 3G/ 3g connection problems on Vodacom. I'm using EDGE only now :(

You think RIM will cut their major advantage in a growing market?

I beleive the rumour to be false. Vodacom have had huge issues the last few months that have nothing to do with BIS/BBM.

If however you talk about those that abuse BIS to download gigs and gigs of data , then yes I think that will be hammered down.

Cut down, I mean like complete laceration of the service.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've read the news thou and got the answer.

@Kosmik, do you have an idea what will be the limit to download? Because I download between 500mb - 700mb per billing cycle/ month...

"Cut down" ROFL like a tree hmm somebody must have sent a BBM broadcast to the 'News'... 42 42 42 If you do not forward these numbers to all your friends and believe it to be the absolute truth then RIM will think your account is dormant and delete it :p

BIS was not meant for major downloads hence the restriction of file sizes, some folks got cleaver though and just repackaged files in smaller packets. I'm not sure, I use my BB A LOT for everything but I don't download off it, as a standard heavy user I suppose my data is in the 100Mb-200Mb range but I also switch from 3G to wifi and back as I move so it's hard to tell ( uncapped at work and uncapped at home ).

And judging by your post about being moved to edge and Vodacoms announcement this morning, seems you're going to be throttled.

Check the news page. The rumor was correct.

Yeah BIS is being shutdown and throttle system being forced worldwide, many folks are experiencing bad service with BIS. This could be a worldwide trend cause RIM aint doing hawt :(

EDGE is capable of this.

EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps

236.8 kbps is still more than sufficient for BBM, email and light browsing (What BIS was intended for in the first place). Should you want the faster 3G speeds you can switch to the Vodafone browser which goes via the normal internet or vlive apn and you will be charged for data used.
