I have heard a rather disturbing (if true) rumour. Rumour goes that Vodacom will be introducing a upgrade/alternative to 3G and that people who are using current hardware will not be able to use the hardware on the new System.

Im hoping this is just a bad rumour as it also states that Users will have to purchase new hardware as it wont be swopped out.

ok but if hsupa gets launched will the normal/current 3g devices work or not.

edit: only reason im entertainng this rumour is, so that if its true and new hardware needs to be bought i can take leave when that happens.

thats good to hear. now i need to think of another reason to book some leave ;-)

As with all rumours from unnamed sources and that develop a life of their own not based on fact and that evolve by word of mouth, IMO the following word applies - and it could be the first time I have ever used this word: "poppycock".

Vodacom will at some point introduce a WiMax service, however if anyone is expecting their HSDPA modems to work with WiMax, then I suggest letting fingers do the walking through the Shrink section in the Yellow Pages, other than that backwards compatibility applies to the HSPA network and modems etc.

I think you trying to say Voda (all SPs) will introduce a faster data service that standard data cards and modems cant use???

Ye then you right. HSDPA 3.6MBs and 7.2MBs wont be supported by current data cards The old Novatels that are a year old.

Even phones like the ZV50.

But the N95's, E90's, and USB modems that are 3,6Mbs compatible will work..... and then theres 7.2MBs that will also need new hardware or maybe a SW upgrade.

Ok so lets say vodacom is rolling out full hsdpa (3.6Mbs) the people using e220's and the pcxpress cards wont need to upgrade hardware(maybe firmware) but holders of the older pcmcia cards (novatel's and (hauwei e620?)) will need to get new hardware?

i never said that if they rolled out wimax, people would like to use current hardware.

Or more correctly that it was done some time back.
the people using e220's and the pcxpress cards wont need to upgrade hardware(maybe firmware)
Correct.
but holders of the older pcmcia cards (novatel's and (hauwei e620?)) will need to get new hardware?
Incorrect.

I know you didn't, I simply commented on one of the possible meanings of the rumour that you posted.

I suggest that you tell the person that told you about this rumour, that the rumour is a derivative of proverbial stuff that hits fans.

What is "full HSDPA"? I read some time ago that Ericsson were testing HSDPA at speeds of 24Mbps.

They will probably need new hardware to take advantage of the new speeds, but they can continue to get their current speeds on their existing hardware.

The current HSPA spec maxes out at 14.4Mb/s. Anything above that will be the next gen spec, UTE.

Got lost in too few hours sleep....

Actually Ultra (far away) Long-Term-Evolution is probably not so far off.....
Time is relative, but I agree that <prediction>~14Mbps HS[D]PA will probably be a technical reality long before TelkodemonopoliesMedia supplies IPTV over ADSL2+ to more than 1 million customers</prediction>.

Yes, my mistake, 14.4Mbps, not 24Mbps.

Here's an article about the new generation stuff:
http://www.telecomasia.net/article.php?type=article&id_article=6135
We can look forward to 14.4Mbps download and 1.9Mbps upload on HSDPA and HSUPA, and 144 Mbps for download and 24 Mbps upload on LTE, and Telkom will still be trying to overcharge us for local calls.

As per usual the network equipment will lead the terminal (modem) equipment by a fair amount. It's a real challenge to build the technology and CPU requirements into something as small as an Express card.
