I have been run-commuting to work for about 6 months now, I leave my car at the office with my laptop and a tog bag with fresh clothes etc. I then run home and back to work the next day.

The only problem I have at the moment is that I have to buy lunch on the days I run to work.

So I have been looking around for a comfortable backpack to run with so that I can at least fit my lunch into it.

Anyone run-commuting or trail running with a backpack that can suggest a good one?

I used to do it last year, ran 3kms to and from work. I just used a normal backpack but very quickly rubbed through some of my light T-Shirts from the bouncing of the backpack.

Now my commute is 9.6km each way and I dont think I will be able to do this each day.

You need to eliminate bounce which means that everything in the pack must be secured inside with straps or whatever. Then you need to ensure that the pack is really tight against you.Go to the store and try them out because you need to test this kind of thing in person.

Thule - Best backpack I've ever owned and I've plowed through K-Way, Karrimor and Dakine! They should have one to match your needs although they are quite expensive.

Cheers

I can't find a smaller profile backpack, the smallest are the camera bags and GoPro type bags, but those tend to be a bit bulky.

Let me know if you come across any models

What about something like this:

These types of backpacks are pretty expensive. I have a smaller one from Cape Union Mart for hydration on my long runs. You can just take the water bladder out if there is one. I would go into a Cape Union Mart and ask for help. They could potentially order in for you. Don't waste your time with Sportsman's Warehouse. Have been disappointed with them far too many times.

Also, there is a whole section in Mall of Africa dedicated to fitness equipment and gear. Maybe take a stroll through there when you can get to it.

Thanks, yeah I saw this one on another forum. I will definitely see if they can get one for me and the cost.

I like Cape Union Mart as they are very accommodating with returns and warranties.

Its 9km one way.

Its such a practical solution, save petrol, car maintenance costs, no traffic etc.

Sheesh so almost 20km a day - well done.
Question - is there showers at work lol

Yeah, luckily we have showers at work (at the gym), otherwise it would not be an option.

If people could start running/cycling to work, the benefits would be huge.

Yeah - the cycling thing will never happen as motorists in Jhb are way too impatient, aggressive and/or inattentive.

not sure you what you have for lunch, but can't you keep it at work? Buy a loaf of bread, small marge and block of cheese and keep it in the fridge or will it 'walk'

Been doing the run commute for 2 years. The most comfortable ones are Salomon, but $&*& expensive. If you don’t to trail runs, it will not be worth it. I use another cheapie that was in special 2years ago. I removed the water pack from it and it can handle my phone, wallet, keys, some food, and a light jacket. Just find one that is for runners. The cycle packs doesn’t always run that well.

Check the cheapies at MR price, I bought one (R350) for trail running. And as creeper suggested, remove the bladder if you don't need water and use the space for your lunch

A new Decathlon store is opening next weekend in Alberton and they are advertising crazy specials, maybe you can pick up a good bag there. I bought a backpack (for hiking) last year and its still great.

I initially cycled to work, I used my mountain bike and never drove on the road, only pavements and dirt paths. But that is highly dependent on your route, won't work well in the CBD

You were doing so good until you turned into a crossfit/vegan type :p

Meat is the order of the day, and you won't find me bragging about the workout I just did - this seems to help with maintaining good relationships with friends and family ;)
