I'm looking to get a new graphics card and these two are pretty much the same price.

-1060 has higher clock speeds and is outperforming the 480 at the moment on most things.
-The 480 has more ram so when games require more ram this is gonna start outperforming the 1060 (according to reviews).

From my experience Nvidia graphics cards break forcing you to upgrade and AMD cards keep working forever, not sure if its just me that this happens too. Has build quality on either cards gone up down?

Which card should I get?

Both sets of cards have hundreds of variants Strix, Red Devil, Zotac, Msi etc
Which variants of the cards are worth spending a little more money on?

I would wait till first quarter 2017 for the new AMD Vega cards or even a bit longer for the new Nvidia cards.

My idea of the 2 giants are that AMD makes more future proof cards in comparison.

The RX480 will give you more headroom going forward. AMD cards get better over time and I wasn't impressed by the 1060's DX12 performance.

And AMD had DX12 and Vulkan in mind when they designed the RX480(little bit of future proofing)

wait for the new cards in first quarter 2017.. gives you some time to add some cash to your current amount you are wanting to spend and you can get the top of the range brand new card when it comes out.. just because..

Wait until Spring 2018, I heard they're working on something really fast at AMD.

Never have I ever read such an awesome and positive post or couple of posts that have not been negative towards AMD/ ATi.

I just wanted to say that, ive always been an ATI/ AMD fan and its so nice to read positive reviews and thoughts.

For me, the 1060 is the more optimal option, and with the good local Zotac prices available on the 1060, it is by no doubt the better choice. The RX480 is simply too hot to buy, and bloody expensive. Wootware has the Powercolor Devil at a great price. I was considering the XFX and then by going the EKWB route,

but now with Vega around the corner I have made up my mind.

The 1060 is better in dx11, while the 480 is better in dx12 and Vulkan.

I'd go 480 for future proofing.

For the here & now get a 6GB Zotac or Galax, vram is not a issue. The 480s are to hot for my liking and my chassis will just make things worse.

Next year if you see something better flog the 1060 and get another card, they hold their value quite well. Got my 2GB 960 in Feb 2015 and sold it Aug 2016,I got 80% of my money back after 18 months which is pretty good I reckon.

Who knows, next year I might be looking at Vega again.

Is this because you got the stock with the blower type setup?
I assume that the Asus cards with the 3 fans fixes this issue?

I did not get a 480, I looked at the reviews and saw the temps of the cards on an open test bench and that made it a no no.

The Asus Strix has a very good cooler (probably the best of the lot, not sure about PC Devil) and keeps the card cool. The heat from the card gets dumped into the chassis though which is not so lekker in a chassis like my CM silencio 352. I don't like it when things go over 60C

Think I'm gonna get the MSI RX480 which is the best of the batch of RX 480's.

I can get it for R4850 which is pretty much the same price as the mid tier 1060's and a lot less then the top of the range 1060's.

I've got the 1060 6G and honestly the only reason I only bought it over the RX480, was availability and that I didn't have to uninstall my nvidia drivers :D..
From all reviews, it seems they so close, I doubt you'll notice the 1 or 2 frames here and there.

Pick which ever and just play!!
