Rx 480 vs 1060

Nice vid. Where does 1 buy EKG units?

It would be a dumb move as per the video. The block alone will set you back R1500 min before shipping & VAT. Factor in a radiator, pump & fans you've gone way past a 1070 price and probably approaching 1080 territory if not exceeding it.

Gonna hang on till rage this weekend and see if I can get a good deal on either card.

Last time I bought a card was at rage in 2012 (Radeon 7770) and got a great deal on it.

So hoping I can get another great deal this year.

For the here & now get a 6GB Zotac or Galax, vram is not a issue. The 480s are to hot for my liking and my chassis will just make things worse.

Next year if you see something better flog the 1060 and get another card, they hold their value quite well. Got my 2GB 960 in Feb 2015 and sold it Aug 2016,I got 80% of my money back after 18 months which is pretty good I reckon.

Who knows, next year I might be looking at Vega again.

I'm going to quickly borrow this thread, I know AMD cards tend to run hot but just to compare, how hot does your 1060 get?

I've got the MSI 1060 6G OC
Mines around 60ish in light games and gets up to 75 in more demanding games.

I keep it at 60C with a custom fan profile, in summer it will obviously run hotter.

Then I am really happy with my AMD card, the highest it went up to yesterday was 76°C.

Come summer time hitting 80-83C thermal throtteling will kick in I think. Might want to look into undervolting to bring temps down.

I really think the reference cooler and back plate is good at keeping the temps isolated, we've already seen high 30's and the highest it went was 79°C.

The ambient temperature of the room and airflow of the case also plays a big part.

When I got the card I read on other forums and reddit where people were high 80's and even 90°C an no one really seemed concerned.

The Strix is a nice card (if you're into rainbows, etc) but at its current price it's close to entry-level 1070 territory, and there's really only one winner then.

Still kinda sad that a card as awesome as the 480 is hampered by thermal throttling. If it wasn't for that, it'd definitely be my choice ahead of the 1060.

It really isn't though if you have the right fan profile set. Even when I had my reference 480, I had no problems with heat with an overclock and a slight bump on the fan curve.

Aftermarket coolers will do this fine with less noise. The secret it just to increase the fan rpm as they generally ship it with it set very conservatively to keep it as silent as possible.

My PC overheats and stays off in Summer.
Wellington temperatures reaching 43 degrees plus the man cave is in an attic... not a good combo during Summer.

I was in Wellington for three weeks in December, that sort of heat isn't natural, you have a legitimate reason to invest into watercooling your system.

Also noticed that with my Powercolor Devil...the default fan profile speeds were way low. After fiddling a bit, it's still quiet but I'm not worried about melting anything anymore :p

Just picked up a brand new Sapphire Nitro 4GB RX 480 on Carb for R3850. Couldn't pass it up for that price

Now I'm going to have a 1060 and 480 :D

That's why I bought my RX 470, the guy OK'd me to do a trade in with my old GPU, which has already done its duty and served its purpose so I didn't consider it as currency I was spending, so in my mind I only paid R2299 for the RX 470.
