Anyone with experience on the Ryobi petrol generators.

My 6500 starts after about 5 or so pulls and then runs smooth under load and with no load.
About 15 or so minutes later it will start surging while running. Even with no load on it.

Short of the usual checking of the plug, filters etc, does anyone have an idea exactly what would cause this?

Plug a multimeter in and watch it when this occurs
Sounds like the AVR is doing something weird when it warms up a bit
Worth a shot

Oh man. I need to go look for that multi meter. It's in a box somewhere. Recently moved so I'm still looking for my sanity as well.

Otherwise also give the carb a good clean. Old fuel can clog it and cause it to idle higher than normal as it is throttled.
I often have this problem on my 2 stroke motorbike
Dirty carb

Will get a spark plug, can of carb cleaner, new fuel filter and see how it goes.

Was quite a surprise this morning. Previous owner promised "it was serviced" hahaha

What happens if you put a load on it? Generators don't normally like to be run without load

Same and even dies on me.
How much fuel is in the tank? I had that with my little 950, there was fuel but not enough for the motor to keep running.

That is a bit too obvious don't you think?

Hey, there was literally what I thought was a liter of fuel left in my tank :-), but it was just the illusion :-P. The 950 doesn't have a gauge to tell you how much it has. Though surging does point to a fuel problem, either the fuel was dirty, the carb is dirty or fuel filter isn't great. Spark plug would normally be difficulty starting.

I would also say give it a good clean. Speaking of which. I need to give mine a service lol. Thanks for the reminder

When last did you give it a service? Age of the unit and hours run?
Petrol also goes funny if its left for a long time
If you are handy you can try pumping in a can of carb cleaner, a new plug and some fresh petrol....Check if there is also a fuel filter somewhere, replace that....Check all connections are tight and clean.

I quickly made friends with someone who owned a bike shop......
I need one of those. Bike needs a lot of work. Basically a tear down and rebuild. Standing for a while.

He said he only just bought it now from someone who said it was 'serviced'
So who knows?
