Ryobi 6500 surging

I still have my hand book for the generator. If you change the spark plug the gap should be 0.7-0.8mm
I cant find one for the manual for the 6900. Only the 6900K

I suppose it is not a major difference?

All the Chinese knock off Honda engines are the same. Use an NGK BP6ES sparkplug with gap .7 -.8 mm. Brand new plugs are usually that gap out of the box. You can also use any cheap multigrade oil. And a spraycan of carb cleaner does wonders.

Anyone with experience on the Ryobi petrol generators.

My 6500 starts after about 5 or so pulls and then runs smooth under load and with no load.
About 15 or so minutes later it will start surging while running. Even with no load on it.

Short of the usual checking of the plug, filters etc, does anyone have an idea exactly what would cause this?
How often do you service it? Sounds like the AVR.

Yes they all use the same engine.
Basically 5 things to service.
Oil change SE 10W-30
Air cleaner Wash the element in solvent and rehydrate with engine oil
Change spark plug
Clean fuel filter in fuel tap
Clean the muffler screen.

And to save yourself endless trouble never turn the engine off after running but instead close the fuel tap at the bottom of the fuel tank close to the carburettor and let the engine die from lack of fuel. Leave it shutoff until you use the gennie again. A gummed up carb from evaporated fuel is a bastard to clean.

Back to this old thing again.

Running but I'm noticing flickering on my lights this morning and my coffee machine sounds like the pump increases and decreases in strength. Very much like the voltage is fluctuating.

Time to take it in? Something I can check again?

That does sound like voltage, I would get someone to look at it.

The voltage meter does jump a little bit but stays over 220v.

FFS. This thing... never buy a secondhand generator.

Kept it running with just my wifi and one computer connected.

The light in my office was still dimming the whole time.

I tried my 2600i and it hit overload quite quickly. No idea what else was running that would cause that though. Geyser and fridges were off.

I could hear mine surging last night. As I said before the choke is causing the problem. If you remove the air filter you can see the choke butterfly. Check and see if is fully open when you push the choke full in. Mine is not it actually goes past the full open position so it cause an over rich mixture which cause the surging affect.

I didn't see it mentioned yet but a fuel cap that doesn't vent would also cause fuel starvation.

Try to take off the fuel cap when it's surging, and try to listen if there is a rush of air sucked into the tank as the seal releases. If the unstable running/voltage improves, then the vent could be clogged. It will be a bit hard to hear when you have 98dB of cylinder slamming away nearby though.

Some of them don't have a push pull choke lever but a swing lever which gets loose very quickly. Piece of elastic to hold it open works well.

No, I mean with servicing the generator?

My fuel cap is a little worse for wear to be honest. Some rusting on the inside. Will check this out though.

Will definitely check this out. Might be a loose something there.

It is a swing lever indeed.

Wait something hit overload on the 2600i? What were you running on it?

To be honest I'm not 100% sure what was on.
Fridges and geyser was off at the time.
In my study it was a single light and my 32" monitor / laptop.

Time to start tripping some plugs and find the culprit.

Edit: Two floodlights were on.
