SA armed forces in dire straits

We'll who is going to invade us? China, USA, Botswana, Zim? Only thing SANDF have to do is protect our borders form aliens, that includes the sea.

They should be deployed to protect farmers, rhino, illegal entry on borders, etc etc etc.
There are thousands of things they could and should be doing.

No lets rather sit bank and screw around.

This actually good news - once the people start to rebel against the ANC government, they won't have any noteworthy armed forces left to surpress the people.

Already been invaded by Zim. And China runs SA's foreign policy.

job done.

Thabo Mbeki opened the borders, so no need to protect them.
And look at the bloody mess that made.

The Navy do however need to protect our fishing waters, but they don't do that very well.
They dont much else either.

For rhino's you'd want park rangers, SANPARKS are trying to get more of them.
too little too late and its not working. Its a war, the barbaric criminals carry AK's, SANPARKS are not equipped for bush warfare.

Protecting farmers, well that is another story.
??? The Army is a bloody mess, the Air force is worse, during WC2010 they had to pay private ex air force pilots to fly. What a bloody doisgrace

How much of an army do we really need?

Navy I can understand, as we need some kind of defence to protect against poachers, pirates and other sea born threats. And a smallish airforce can also be used to support in this regard.

Besides the odd peace-keeping missions for the AU/UN and being called in to assist the Police occasionally, do we need much of an army?

the Airforce currently does not have sufficient budget to keep all 26 its new Gripen fighter planes in the air.

so why buy 26 NEW planes if you know you dont have the budget to keep them in the air? Sometimes I just shake my head.

But it has been like this for years. There is such incredible waste in procurement for the army, navy and air-force such that they can pay up to 100+ times the price for straightforward items. I once quoted to insert some Cat 5 cable into an existing duct about 250m long. I was called in and asked why my quote was so cheap. I figured a day's work and the cable, a total cost of R 3000 since it was at the Atlantis Shooting Range. Some of the quotes were over R 35000 for the same thing. In the end it took 3 of us 4 hours to complete and I even connected up the switches each end.

If they go on like this, paying R 80,00 for a box of staples that you can get for R15,00 at PNA, no wonder we are in dire straights.

At the Goodwood Base, the ammunition room has not held ammunition for over 15 years. There are about 20 World War II helmets in the room and they do a stock-take every year. It is incredible. At first I thought it was funny, but now realise it is tragic

Heard the same story... they buy stuff on tender and it's like X15 more expensive than just driving to Makro and buy it there.

How did they break the engine, if there is no budget for the navy.

Water got into the engine through the underwater exhaust outlet, can't really blame the ANC for this.

This isn't really news though, this has been the status quo for some time already - the SANDF has been badly underfunded for a long time.

The Gripen is an interesting example, 26 aircraft purchased, nine of which are the dual seat version without a gun. The SAAF has so far only leased 10 short range air-to-air missiles and they were planning to buy some Paveway 2 laser guided bombs, other than these weapons the Gripen can only drop dumb bombs. Massive waste of money to buy an aircraft like this yet not provide the funds needed to operate it.

It is pretty shocking to compare the SADF of the late 1980s with the SANDF of today.

I actually had that on my list, but compared to the total fskedupness value of the other crappies decided it wasn't fskedup enough to compete.

Well, it seems like you don't have Axxess as a service provider.
