But it has been like this for years. There is such incredible waste in procurement for the army, navy and air-force such that they can pay up to 100+ times the price for straightforward items. I once quoted to insert some Cat 5 cable into an existing duct about 250m long. I was called in and asked why my quote was so cheap. I figured a day's work and the cable, a total cost of R 3000 since it was at the Atlantis Shooting Range. Some of the quotes were over R 35000 for the same thing. In the end it took 3 of us 4 hours to complete and I even connected up the switches each end.
If they go on like this, paying R 80,00 for a box of staples that you can get for R15,00 at PNA, no wonder we are in dire straights.
At the Goodwood Base, the ammunition room has not held ammunition for over 15 years. There are about 20 World War II helmets in the room and they do a stock-take every year. It is incredible. At first I thought it was funny, but now realise it is tragic
