SA bangs the piracy drum

"roughly 41% of all software installed on personal computers is obtained illegally"
Be grateful for the other 59%.

It's safer and more convenient to pirate.
Just make sure youve stolen the latest anti-virus ;)

Give me realistic pricing and I will stop pirating.

Where does SA rank in the global piracy stakes? Without searching I would say very far down the list due mainly to our "broadband". Probably a drop in the ocean?

How much of the "59% group" is included in the "41% group"? For example: user has legal copy of windows and office (probably the most expensive of his software) but loads a pirated version of AV software or a cheap little game like Bejewelled that he gets from his buddy.

What is the monetary ratio between his legal vs pirated software? 98% legal vs 2% pirated?

Many businesses also unwittingly contribute to software piracy. They put pressure on their staff to meet stiff deadlines. Staff takes work home but software is incompatible or not loaded on home PC. Business does not assist staff to obtain legal copy of software at reduced price. Employee cannot afford legal copy. Ergo, obtains pirated copy. Meets deadline, business is happy.

I dunno, they also count corner dvd sales and one guy can download something, stick it on a dvd send it out and have it return 6 months later with 200 'thank you' notes:p

I recall a place in Durban that got shut down due to them installing the same windows (with the same license) on every PC they sold - obviously using the ~R700 saving to undercut competitors who used legit windows.

But - I'd guess many 1st time buyers would unknowingly be attracted to a cheaper pc, unknowingly contributing to these piracy stats, and not knowing any better than linux is a suitable, if not better, alternative for most day to day activities.

Instead free and open source software is legitimately licensed software that just happens to be free to share and copy.
and modify.

Anyways, FOSS FTW - let BSA look after the junk software if they like.

aaa a bit of comedy this early in the morning :D

If only COD4 worked in Ubuntu.......

Never windows on any pc or laptop of mine again.

Was given the pricing for VS 2010 yesterday.

Pro - $1119
Premuim - $4500
Team - $11,500

Small development companies will be hurt a lot by this.

+1

Put BSA (Bull ****ters Alliance) out of business and go Open Source!

:D

Granted, some Open Source software solutions might not be as polished as their commercial counterparts, but who cares as long as the job gets done in the end?

I still prefer OpenOffice above the rubbish they call Microsoft Office 2007...
