Hey Chubster - where do you take your toyota? Even labour for an oil change is more than that lol.
I also have an ol' toyota - 93 model... love the maintenance costs.

I buy the parts from Midas and it includes the air filter and Castrol Oil (high mileage). The labour is me :D However I have to take it once in a while to an actual service centre (Toyota Protea) to get it tuned. I try to be as self sufficient as possible. :D 1989 Model 1.6GLE

Aah - yes, I used to do that with my old Opel... might be considering that after the last service. Fortunately the missus drives is and it only has 70k on the clock (nice for a 93 model lol). So it doesn't have to go in that often...
 
No, lithium chemically breaks down, even if not used, over about 2-3 years. Other types age better, but are heavier and degrade faster when used.

So lithium is only worse if not used... others are worse if used? 6 and half a dozen...
 
Some have warned over the use of lithium-ion as batteries as it could explode when a fire breaks out in the car. So I might as well put hydrogen in my car cause both might take off like the shuttle.

Well you'll want the car to last way past 3 years to have any kind of resale. With nicads, you might still have say 70% of max battery life, while lithium might be worthless by then. Replacing the entire stack could be costly either way.
 
Yes the LiPo's energy density is what makes them so attractive, but how many laptop or cellphone batteries have you seen that last longer than 3 years without rapidly declining performance? Just about every ad I see for old notebooks contains a line saying "Battery is dead, but works 100% from power" or just say "battery only lasts 15min". That's the downside.

Li-Po's would give the best energy density / performance but they're very expensive and VERY fragile.

Well if they use NiCad, they must lower the price, because that is just crap compared to Lithium Ion type batteries. You just recently charged your car to find out it is flat in the morning. That is why I dislike NiCad. It discharges a lot faster than Li-Ion. And the way Eskom is enforcing us to save, is not helping either :(
