The reason most of the steel milling has scaled back is because of cheaper imports (so no premium). Mittal steel produce steel as did Tata steel, but I believe they've sold off their interests in Richards Bay, not sure to whom.

I didn't get involved in the subject matter as I don't fully comprehend the complete background to it, I'm still reading up on that. I was just surprised that a south african could be happy about something that's damaging the country and could cost us jobs, something that he didn't even deny after I said it just so by the way.

There are still restrictions to imports, for automotive product less so. Mittal is losing business due to supply and cost issues, they have ridiculous minimum order quantities and very long lead times, also their standard rolling has been limited to a handful of grades for a very long time, special engineering and tool steels are no longer produced point blank, you have to order 50+ tons if you want them to roll it.

Sometimes people need to learn the hard way. That's what going to happen if we continue on our current path. Some hard times and a lot of learning opportunities.

The tarrifs (restrictions) are relatively recent after Mittal lobbied for them to save themselves. Yes Mittal have many issues and aren't what they are from the early days when they didn't have to contend with competition. I think they got exposed when they split up into manufacturing and mining. The former Iscor mining (now Kumba) are still doing well and weathered the resources slump well too

True, they aren't used to the competition, they also seem to not care, even for customers they have a take it or leave it attitude. I'd type you a book of their lack of care just from my own dealings but don't want to derail the thread.

EDIT: Mittal now owns the Kumba Iron Ore mine in Thabazimbi where I grew up. I still find it very suspicions that the mine was closed and sold just after discovering a new ore reserve.

Thats the difference in our mindset.. There is no joy at all. Just the reality and dissapointment that the SA leadership is adamant in sinking our ship called the Republic of South Africa with their arrogance, attitude, mentality and stupidity.

Why are people upset with the local government when it is the Trump administration that created these tariffs in the first place? Or am I missing something...

Because it's the ANC's fault apparently. They must go and beg for scraps at the feet of their masters and forgo any independence they have.

So you want to buy a product from a business and then you receive shît services and the business owner tell you, you aren't welcome in his business. So you decide to go somewhere else or manufacture your own stuff.

Who is at fault?
If we are anti-west, obviously they will do what they can to not buy our products. Wait until they review AGOA and we start loosing real jobs.

Well, these kind of "National Security" based tarrifs will just push SA closer to China. That will be the net effect to most African countries. And BS tariffs like this will hasten it.
