Cape Town - An SA Express plane from Cape Town had to complete an emergency landing in Windhoek, Namibia without a nose wheel on Saturday.

According to a statement released by SA Express, an emergency was declared when the nose wheel could not fully extend outward just before landing.

The plane was carrying 33 passengers and four crew members. None of them were injured.

According to The Aviation Herald, the airport was closed for about five hours.

As a result, a number of flights had to be diverted or return where they had come from.

The report says SAA flight SA-76 from Johannesburg had to return to Johannesburg and departed again in the evening, resulting in a delay of five hours.

Now watch the hordes of forumites jump in and claim SAA express is in disrepair...

Nationwide had 2 incidents and then they were closed down... SA Airlink is on their 5th high profile incident. I guess their aircraft's are maintained to the BEST ABILITY of their staff. I really cant fault the technicians for trying their best to fix planes with a shifting spanner and a hammer.

See... Told you so

Heard about the 1st world air disasters recently? Deaths involved? Yes.

I guess SA Airlink are trying to be the best (unfortunately its crashing).. I cant fault that logic of being the best. The Aerovlot safety records(lack of safety) will be broken in no-time at this rate.

* On September 24, 2009, Airlink Flight 8911, a BAe Jetstream 41, crashed in the suburb of Merebank shortly after takeoff from Durban International Airport, injuring its crew of three and one person on the ground. The captain, Allister Freeman, died as a result of complications from his injuries on 7 October 2009.

* On 18 November 2009, Airlink BAe Jetstream 41 (registration:ZS-OMZ) on flight SA-8488 veered off the runway while taking-off from Port Elizabeth Airport to East London. All of the 32 passengers and crew were uninjured. The airline attributed the incident to bad weather with decreased visibility, rain and wind present.

* On 7 December 2009, an Airlink Embraer ERJ 135 (registration:ZS-SJW) on scheduled flight SA-8625, overshot the runway when trying to land in wet weather at George Airport; no fatalities were reported.

* On 23 December 2009 the SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) grounded their fleet of 14 BAe Jetstream 41 planes

SA Express (SAX) and SA Airlink are completely seperate airlines. What has SA Airlink's safety record and incidents got to do with SAX?? They dont even fly the same equipement...

EDIT : for the record, this is the second incident in ten years SAX have had with nose gear not extending.

SAX is still a parastatal... It has just been positioned further away from SAA, thats all. If I recall correctly, SAX is still part of Transnet, and SAA is now independant, or vice-versa.

If only they could get a word in edge-wise between the rabid propagandists like you, who seem to jump into every possibly-slightly-negative thread (*) attempting to claim that the sky is not in fact blue. Sorry bud, SAA express are in disrepair.

(*) Seriously, 3 minutes response time? What are you, sitting and waiting clicking 'refresh' all day for any negative news that gets posted so you can immediately pounce and attempt to thwart factual discussion? That is not normal or healthy, get help.

Can I offer you a nappy with that response?

sigh... all the people who love to try to stir poo where there is none to stir.. I would love it if the media/ sa citizens would get their facts straight before they try to accuse an organistation/individual of all sorts of stuff...

Like has been stated above, SAX is not part of SA Airlink. It is NOT part of SAA. They have a commercial agreement, and that is where the link ends for now. SAX technical is independant of Link and SAA. SAX falls under the department of public enterprises, and has posted profits for the last few years..

Now this emergency was handled according to the book.. The captain has over 25000 flying hours, with 10000 hours on the CRJ. The first officer has been flying the CRJ for 16 months, and there happened to be a training captain flying with as well with alot of experience on type. Aircraft damage has been minimised and should even be repairable again. The passengers were always informed about what was happening in the aircraft. There were no injuries, except for 1 women who fainted after the accident.

Yes, SAX has had technical related diversions/delays in the past, and will have in the future, but so does every other airline in the world....
