The Department of Water Affairs has warned that South Africa faces "another Eskom" challenge if more money is not made available for bulk water infrastructure maintenance.

Water Affairs chief financial officer Onesmus Ayaya told MPs yesterday that much of South Africa's bulk water infrastructure was in danger of collapse and that water prices might therefore have to be revised.

Ayaya said many of the more than 400 "infrastructure assets that supply raw bulk water" were decades old and were increasingly permitting contamination of major water sources.

Repeated requests for additional funding had not delivered enough money to the department to solve the looming crisis, he said

oh sh*t

No water, no power.......

WTF is happening to my W&L payment every fk'ng month? This is money they can bank on 100% but they fk it up? I honestly can't understand how these fools do it.... It's beyond human comprehension

Somebody woke up to the fact that infrastructure might be slightly important for the country to run. Aiyaya ...

so we know another 400% price hike next year for water....

Well i dunno about else where but down here its been on things to check for a while. Not sure if other places has been planning as long as cpt.(and that was primarily due to drought/water shortage a few yrs ago)

No no no no no you got it all wrong,

Its a 50% increase this year then a 50% on that next year then a 50% on that next year then a 50% on that next year then we'll see and hope and pray that some idiot didn't miss calculate it like the bus rapid transport system.

no surprises here... they milked the system and made them and all their buddies rich... now it's time to start actually doing something.... just make the people pay again.

It alarms me that I never pay more than R20 for water as month! And I am by no means conservative about it.

 That is a bit low. :erm:

I worry about water more than power. They cannot pull water out of their asses when it's finished. At least you do have alternatives for power.

Or is it sustainable yet to convert ocean water. Then we do not have to worry about global warming that much.

If all BMW 7 series ran on water, there would be no crisis.

I think the issue is building and maintaining infrastructure for water treatment. Even if it were ocean water, I suspect we would still be facing the same issues.

So typical ... this happened in Zimbabwe too.
The colonists built, installed and maintained the infrastructure but once the government changed hands the maintenance stopped. All that money flowed into fancy cars, houses, salaries and holiday trips overseas.
Everything goes well for 10-15 years and then ...

If you want a road map for the future of South African infrastructure just look a little bit North of the non-existent border.

I have to agree 100%.

Fckal maintenance on any infrastructure is what the ANC did. Lekker to drive Beemeers, and do fckal work. And now the wheels are coming off, and now the tax payers has to foot the bill for all their screw ups.

But then ANC just says "free water, electricity, jobs".. and the crowds goes wild... and "problem" is solved.

Having been involved with the water and sanitation industry for years i can honestly say that you eint seen nothing yet.

If you are able to start looking at getting yourself a good water filter.

Check out www.grahamtek.com

I phoned a few weeks back, to inquire about the bakkie sized units I had read about, some years ago.

They now also have small R4000 domestic units that push through 12L/Hour.

I have looked at atmospheric water devices for a while now also. The cheapest models go for +-R5000 and do about 18-28L/24Hours.

Most are made in USA.

DIY: Anyone can also purchase a gas chest freezer. Run it with your own biogas.

Fill the freezer 2/3 with water, run a small pump to circulate the ice cold water in the freezer, through a nearby, screened radiator/heat exchanger in a well ventilated area.

Collect the condensation that builds up at the bottom. Run the water you plan to drink, through a 6 stage reverse osmosis filter. http://www.h2o.co.za/products.htm

Yep, and those that take action now, to wean themselves off the grid and off the public water supply, will hardly notice the hiccups.

Some, could make tons of money, installing systems. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=198931

Time and tide...
