SA iPod prices see reduction

I wish everyone would stop with the unfair price comparisons (against US prices, without taxes, without import duties without transport costs) so that the serious debate on the real pricing problems (which I agree there still are) don't get laughed off.

If you are going to compare prices, factor in UK/European prices (that's where Core gets from) and taxes and shipping costs. Then we can see the real price discrepancies without Core being able to roll out their usual (and applicable) excuses. Don't give them the easy arguments to win.
 
Was looking for an 8gb Touch recently so price drop happened at just the right time. Have now ordered one from Kalahari for R1999
 
regarding Core and Digicape: I've heard that Digicape gets better prices at Core than what the other resellers get.
regarding the price drop: This is probably because they must fit the iPad in there somewhere, otherwise why would the computers' prices not drop.

They dropped their prices, just because we don't pay as much as the US does (the cheapest in the world) doesn't mean we should go around complaining.

It's more like: "we milked you at as long as we could, and now with the demand drop-off, we can sucker you back to buy our overpriced gadgets, at slightly lower prices!"

If they think we'll buy the dollar exchange as the reason, then they clear take us for idiots. The Rand-Dollar has been trading between R7.25 and R8.00 for way longer than just a few months.

Still not going to be lured into buying an iPod!
 
Wow, so core drops the effective exchange rate on the iPod from between 13.40-14.00 ZAR/USD to between 10.00-11.40 ZAR/USD, bringing the markup roughly in line with that of the macs.

The only conceivable reason is to make space for the iPad. There's 100USD between iPod and iPad and the same between iPad and Macbook.... leaving the mac mini priced round about what the iPad should cost.

So based on pure speculation the iPad should retail between R5,500 and R9,500 if Core wants to have any hope of selling any.
 
It's all about the rand/dollar yet that hasn't changed for about a year. Does that mean Core have been over charging people during that time? Snakes, still won't buy anything from them.

I don't care that they say they get them from the UK. I doubt they ship from China first to the UK and then they put them back on a flight to SA. Even if they did, they don't buy them off the shelf there. The entry level Nano should be around R1400 based on the Irish pricing (which is the one I went and looked at). They also have to pay their taxes and shipping.
 
The missus has been waiting months for me to get her a new ipod for the first time in 5 years. (unfortunately I broke it) I just keep telling her "no" wait until friends/family go overseas as it's cheaper. I refuse to support Apple "distributors" in SA

We are complaining because they are still too high.

Just look how well we fare on the iPod index (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21342811/iPod-Nano-Index) and they are giving us a 15% discount in some cases. Come on, before this we were the fourth most expensive country in the world and almost twice the US price. You can go and kiss their ... if you want to but I will stay boycotting Apple products until they stop with their excuses and charge reasonable prices. Why is it that the WII is cheaper (or at worst, the same prices) then the XBOX 360 Arcade overseas, yet here, it's more expensive then an XBOX 360 Arcade? The only thing in common is Core group and they are rotten.
 
I have always used www.applestuff.co.za. Their service has always been great on all things Apple and they somehow manage Core while always providing better prices than most - more importantly, they do iTunes vouchers for those with US accounts...;-)....
 
surely this is because users are realising that they can get an iphone instead of an ipod and would rather go with that deal?
i assume core doesn't get any cash from mobile operator iphone sales and so needs to recoup their losses by offering a more affordable deal.
that and the fact that consumers are realising that most other phones (samsung/nokia/blackberry) can also play music and sync with wmp without the need to download itunes.
hopefully one day consumers will realise that they can connect any phone with bluetooth/headphone jack/fm transmitter to a wide array of output devices without the need for a dedicated ipod port.
hopefully we'll see an end to adverts which explain storage in terms of amount of songs.
 
If you know someone going to London anytime soon., at duty free, Ipod Touch 8 gig going for 120 pounds (thats like R1300), ipod classic going for R160 pounds (thats like R1700). Saw it Sunday at Gatwick duty free, had to restrain myself :-) Same price at Dixons and HMV
