Very interesting new article:

"...DESPITE price cuts for both international and national long-distance calls announced recently by Telkom, its rates remain the highest among the 14 major economies in the world, a new study shows.


The survey, by US-based telecoms and energy cost control consulting firm NUS Consulting, says Telkom’s high tariffs “continue to hamper South African organisations in their efforts to compete in the world’s major markets”...


I am in the process of moving my business from SA to the US and all for 1 reason: Telkom.

As much as I'd like to stay and continue to help SA grow and develop Telkom makes it impossible to do so.
 
India has created a multi-billion dollar call centre and tech support industry on the back of cheap telecoms. This industry now employs tens of thousands of people. Ironically, some of this traffic traverses the SAT3-SAFE cable ... right past our noses.

ZA is loosing out in in so many ways. Most South Africans speak far better english than their typical Indian counterpart.

Telkom may make a ~5 billion profit per year ... but that is generated at an opertunity cost to ZA of at least ~50 billion per year.

We missed the IT boat due Telkom....the monopoly did not help anbody in this country...vodacom and mtn connected far more people during the last ten years than Telkom without a monopoly!!!!
 
I'd rather take the US Army - much stronger and more efficient and therefore cheaper telecoms more quickly.

However I think we need the US to invade Zim first though...
 
Telkom just need to employ some of our genius people from mybroadband.co.za and they can forget about problems....*gg*
 
I don't know if we could do as well as India even with cheap Telekoms.

Been into the Post Office or Telkom lately ?
In fact, come to think of it, received good service anywhere you go lately ?

I haven't.

8 times out of 10, the service is crap and the staff are rude and lazy.
I was in nedbank the other day and there were 3 tellers standing around talking and laughing for 5 minutes before calling the next person - there was a queue of 20 people.

At the same bank, I got such rotten service from a black guy I told him not to worry and went and got help from an efficient Indian lady.

At the Post Office it's a sort of "Eh, what you waaaant" attitude, the same as the Telkom offices.

The majority in this country simply don't have a decent work ethic.

But that's just my opinion.
 
Just an observation, but bb_matt it seems to strike me that your still stuck in the old SA. Services weren't any better then, just shorter queues because only certain people where allowed into certain spots.

Get a grip, swallow it up and move on! If you don't like it stop making not so subtle hints grab your passport and head for the airport.
 
FireFli - so what (Who cares when bb was born) - service still sucks in this country.
The reason service sucks is cos we don't have a decent work ethic.
There is also zero reward from employees that do have a decent work ethic, so, even if some employees have a decent work ethic, eventually they give up and behave like everyone else.
Now - what does that tell you ?
 
Stoke I am not disputing that services in this country suck, and yes something needs to be done to improve them. What I take offence to is the borderline racist comments.
 
I don't see any racist connetations to what bb_matt said.

If it's a spaid, call it a spade!! If it were a white person who gave terrible service, I'm sure he'd just as quickly point that out too. What he said is what he experienced and exactly what most people experience.

Please point out where this borderline cacist comments occured...
 
This is not the first instance where bb_matt has turned the focus to black South Africans. A spade is a spade yes, but I why is it that I have yet to see a comment like "This white guy gave me kuk service", there's never a distinction made in this instance. Quite the opposite seems to be applied and point made if it's a black person.

That’s my 2 cents worth, use or loses it. I am not going to get caught in a debate that cannot be won. IMHO considering the history of this country we should be extra vigilant when making comments that cross race, creed and gender.

But, cos blacks outnumber the other races by atleast 10 to 1, and cos *** service is the norm, chances of you getting *** service from a black person are so much higher, so, duh, stop being so sensitive and face the facts.

The obvious way to improve South Africa's lot is for the majority to provide better service.

Now, how would you like me to word that statement?
 
Let's forget the "was he racist or not" question and focus on us as South Africans irrespective of race. When we see the service provided by any company in this country are we proud of that service? If a foreigner were standing in front of us in the queue, would we be embarrassed at seeing how that foreigner was being treated by fellow South Africans. When you see that sign that says "Proudly South African" - do you feel that way or not?
 
Me neither... unfortunately I don't even think the SNO is going to make a difference. Not for a couple of years at least :/
