Oslo - Norwegian shipping company Odfjell said on Monday it would no longer sail through the pirate-plagued Gulf of Aden, choosing instead the longer, more expensive but also safer route around Cape of Good Hope.

"We will no longer expose our crew to the risk of being hijacked and held for ransom by pirates in the Gulf of Aden," Odfjell chief executive Terje Storeng said in a statement.

He said the decision to send all Odfjell ships around South Africa's Cape of Good Hope instead of through the waters off Somalia would take effect immediately.

"We trust our customers will appreciate this decision which we have taken to safeguard not only our crews and ships, but also the ships' cargo," Storeng said .....

good thing our navy is fully equipped to deal with pirates :D

Wait until the pirates install off-market blue lights on their speedboat and pretend to be Jaco Zama's VIP protection officers. :D

Very good :D
JZ and his cronies would soon have their BBE maritime hijacking squads making loads from the hijacked ships. JZ has first hand experience squeezing international companies.

I don't know why Military vessels just don't escort the tankers... gives the Navy's something to do!

Too expensive. There are hundreds of vessels in those waters, which would you escort and who's gonna pay for it?

Not to be an a-hole about it, but why don't all the people who complain about crime in SA hire around the clock bodyguards?

I have already suggested a solution that the ships pick up a few Executive Outcomes types with .50 weapons. A skinny with an RPG on a small boat will not be a problem.

It may be interesting to look into some maritime law concerning dealing with pirates - there may be an obligation for nations to act. Andfor there being hundreds of vessels - easy - form a convoy.
