SA may build second, cheaper undersea cable

The problem here is not GVT not Big Business.

Here in SA the GVT and Big Businesses are 1 in the same Entity , Telkom.

The problem is the damn ANC power struggle going on. Just like ministers have their fingers in the pie of the lotto some Individuals have their fingers in the Telecoms Pie. Problem is that there are some GVT officials and departments who want to make a difference. The problem is that they arent being invited to those EASSy Meetings. One other potential problem is that there could be another outside souce interfering with the EASSy negotiations. Soley trying to profitteer. One such company could be Telkom, maybe TATA [Neotel] ... who knows...

The problem here is that there is just toooooo much politics going on at the moment and not enough "Business" or should i say "Action".

Remember that gov owns 38% of Telkom, therefore gov is big business. Anyway, since when does a government need to pu$$y-foot around business, they talk and business obeys or leaves; as simple as that.

If you owned 38% of a company, would you be able to dictate how that company is run? Be realistic! Look at it this way - government does not own 62% of Telkom.

Government has to follow the rules, until and if they can change them, but are also at the mercy of BIG business as BIG business has all the money.

Yes, government can make the rules and business has to obey - normal business not BIG business. BIG business believe they are above the rules and due to the power of their money they continually get away with it - they hold government to ransom.

BIG business is NOT the usual run-of-the-mill businesses - it is giant corporations like Telkom, the banks, the mining companies, etc.

They are the ones holding the government and the people of this country to ransom just so that they can feed their greed by making even more money than the disgusting amount of money they are already making.

I think you are all on the wrong tack. We have a watchdog called ICASA who are toothless and generally up to nothing. We need a watchdog with teeth to fight for the consumer which is what ICASA are meant to be doing. IN the UK they have OFTEL who are hugely effective. ICASA really need to pull finger, legislate and prosecute.
