SA may build second, cheaper undersea cable

Its a good start but government needs to stop trying to control everything, deregulate the market so whoever wants to build cables can and whoever wants to provide services in SA is free to do so.

International bandwidth is so crucial that Africa can no longer be held to ransom by private companies looking to profiteer, the governments believe.

Thats a rich comment as the real profiteers here are the SA Government not private business! Weve been held to ransom by our own ANC government, the DOC and ICASA. So if international bandwidth is so crucial why has so little been done about it? Private companies looking to profiteer....righhht..:mad:

How much 'hot air' fibre have we got now then? EASSy, this one, I remember at at least a couple of others. :(

Shope-Mafole also said the department would give Mbeki the telecoms price cuts he was demanding when Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe Casaburri made some policy announcements on May 24.
Yipee, some more e-policy of non discriminatory internet access for all as all SA internet users have pay the same ludicrous rates. This is if Ivy doesn't get sidetracked by a cake sale on that day.

thats rich coming from our government

why dont they just allow access to the current cable and make things cheaper by the end of the month cant be that hard

Salma Hayek 'may' just one day return one of my calls as well.

Round and round and round and round and round we go!!!

So now we wait for more policy changes from DoC, guess we'll get nowhere yet again. I can't see us ever getting the required bandwidth made available by 2010, but then again that's no big surprise!

all these intitiatives

* InfraCO
* NepadCable

are IMMINANT ofcourse

Private companies only profiteer due to lack of competition and yards and yards of BEE redtape.

*sigh* - i just can't keep up anymore, more bull$hit spilling out of la-la land.

I've stopped holding my breath AGES ago, and quite honestly by just saying 'i'm not', is getting old - so perhaps "Whatever" is more appropriate!

May 24 will be another nice feel good speech that will say what they want to do but accomplish bugger all as per norm. I'm not even excited any more cause every time they say xyz date will bring changes, its just a stupid speech ivy wrote the morning before.

Government's 38,3% stake in Telkom is going to sting them in the derrière every time they make such like comments.
Haven't they caught on yet or are they that slow? Eish. :o

EASSy ??

So when is EASSy going to be up and running, i had a look at EASSy.org and in the press release they reckon by mid 2007, could this be true . . . . . . . ? :confused:

Not a chance. They're still in discussion phase. A single meter of cable has yet to be laid.

All of this is in essence just appeasment and articles to shut up the loud calls from the ICT sector to liberate the telecoms industry.

How about considering the following:

It is possible that the government is actually trying to do something but that they are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Maybe, instead of continually criticizing government every time they make a move we might get further by actually supporting them in the battle against big business.

Remember, it's actually big business that are the bad guys!

Remember that gov owns 38% of Telkom, therefore gov is big business. Anyway, since when does a government need to pu$$y-foot around business, they talk and business obeys or leaves; as simple as that.
