SA mobile call rates drop 24%

Mobile voice calls have dropped 24% from June 2010 to June 2012, from R1.37 to R1.04 as a result of the introduction of Call Termination Rate Regulations.

ICASA thinks that this is due to them. They are a bunch of lazy people I've ever come across. If it was not for Patricia De lille they would not have done anything.

They needed political figures to get off their asses.

Now with DTT looming guess who is going to be the hold up?

Morons.

The table should be split into MTN, Cell C & Vodacom so that we can see who has actually dropped their rates and by how much.

Call rates may have dropped in some cases. Dropped calls havent!

The numbers on that table don't make sense.
Not long ago, there was a mybroadband article saying that CellC's market share was only 15%, while Voda and MTN were at 42% each.
And we all know that CellC charges 99c/min
Now this table says that the average prepaid call cost R1.04 per minute
So are we saying that (0.15*99c) + (0.42 * MTN_prepaid_rate) + (0.42 * Vodacom_prepaid_rate) = R1.04????
Either Voda and MTN are alot cheaper than everyone thinks, or CellC is selling a HUUUUGE amount of minutes to offset their market share.

When I saw the heading of the article, I missed the word "rates" on the first read and thought is it only 24% of calls that gets dropped! :wtf:

Me too, plus its fairly accurate as about 1 in 4 of my calls end in a dropped call.

The call duration and revenue is not based on fixed pricing since includes all the specials. So if you talk for 1 hour and pay only R6 due to some special, then you only paid 10c/min.

Ahhhh .... I see!
Then this whole article is pointless.

I agree. Operators have trained people to make calls during off peak unless its business or urgent. Plus these minutes that operators give at the most inconvenient of times/places (like 12 - 5AM?/on a mountain peak), I'm sure also affects the average somewhat. A much more in depth break down of the information is needed.

The interesting thing is that volumes have gone up more than prices have come down... they are making more money on a lower price and the likes of Voda / MTN are still whining

Exactly. Too bad call drop rates have not improved at all. I'm sure my "drop rate" is over 24%...

Se gat.. I'm paying considerably more than R1.04 on average.

As for dropped calls, easily in the 50% range.

Icasa,,,,haha

So the interconnect rate drops by 50% and the mobile companies drop the rate by 24% , seems to me Icasa is only helping the mobile operators, not the consumers.
