SA nears World Cup attendance record

Something doesn't add up here. Visa reported a spend of R1.7bn. Danny Jordaan quotes a figure of R6.5bn. Now either Visa's market share has rapidly decreased or one of them is talking k@k...

Where are the Visa figures from? Do you have a link as I'd be interested to check it out?

WTF does this have to do with SA reaching near record attendance levels? My holy donuts you lot are on a roll tonight. If you have nothing but a brain-spasm to add to the thread, kindly fsck off and don't bother. I cannot wait for school holidays to be over so you lot can bugger off back to creche...

Now this I fully agree with!

It was a short piece on Supersport Blitz 2 days ago. No link unfortunately. I remember doing some rough calculations based on Visa's reported figures and even taking a 50% market share over Mastercard (they record cash withdrawals too), it equated to R500 per tourist, using a figure of 300k tourists. It just didn't sound right at all. The LOC figures of R6.5bn equates to a spend of R17k per tourist so far, which is more in line with what one would expect, taking flights, accomodation and increased cost of tourist living into account.

Visa's figures are either a thumbsuck, their market share has eroded considerably, or Supersport reported incorrectly...

I see it was on Moneyweb. But yeah, I would assume Visa sales would not account for most sales.

http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mw/view/mw/en/page295799?oid=493719&sn=2009+Detail&pid=287226

Of course not. But this equates to a market share of about 26%, including cash withdrawals. It doesn't sound correct. This means that between Mastercard and traveller's cheques, they make up the rest. Seem right to you?

The tourists' card is either going to be Visa or Mastercard or they are using bank traveller's cheques which are rather uncommon these days. So for every purchase, my assumption is that either Visa or Mastercard are accounting for it (apart from savings accounts, that is)

I'd be interested to see the stadium seating comparisons of the World Cups.

Did we just have more seats available or are there less empty seats?

I'm starting to think that Visa has no ideas as I found this, which contradicts the Moneyweb Visa quoted figures :

Figures released last week by Visa Inc. indicate that there has already been a substantial boost to the South African economy. For the first 20 days of June, spending by international visitors in South Africa using Visa-branded payment cards has exceeded US$128 million, a year-on-year increase of 54 percent.

The number of transactions made during the same period was up 60 percent on the previous year, coming to a total of 900,000 - 45,000 a day on average.

"The spending is spread right across the 120,000 merchants that accept Visa in South Africa," said Michael Lynch, Visa Inc.'s Global Head of Sponsorship Management.

Cardholders from the UK, followed by the US, Australia, France and Brazil, have been the biggest spenders, accounting for 51 percent of all expenditure recorded by Visa so far.

Unless they meant it has SUBSTANTIALLY exceeded! :)

[-]Well now that makes no sense whatsoever. Based on the current tourist figures, that is a spend of over R2m per tourist, if Visa account for 100% of the market share. If they only account for half, then it's R4m per tourist. Something does not add up with Visa's reported figures...[/-]

EDIT: hang on, I used $128bn instead of million. One sec.

Okay, so it's roughly a R4k spend per tourist based on 50% market share or R8k based on a 25% market share. Still, the figures are wonky...

Visa hardly holds the lion share of the market - American Express, MasterCard, cash, etc.

Pessimist, this was quoted at length in another thread discussing attendances, along with pictures and capacities for the American stadiums. Feel free to search.

Well AMEX I forgot about but cash is not king in SA. And most tourists are reverting to immediate withdrawals from their bank accounts thorugh international banking cooperation. However 26% of the market in retrospect is not that bad, all things considered. The reported figures still do not make any sense - they're contradictory too...

Don't be so quick to pull the pessimist card. Having chosen not to involve myself in those particular threads, I too was questioning what our fantastic attendance could be attributed to. It's all nice and fluffy to attribute it to great SA spirit, however this is surely not the only reason. Germany for one had fantastic spirit at their WC too. I think to ignore the possibility that our larger capacity stadiums had nothing to do with an increased attendance is a little ignorant...

But we do digress from the thread topic.

The pessimist tag was attached as a carry over from another thread (it seems to be a trend on here so when in Rome).

I stick with the rest of the post. In that other thread I also was kind enough to quote populations of the respective host countries... SA is at the rear by a long shot!

[Note to the mods : The search function on here is useless since the changes! I had to resort to Google to find this]

From the 05/06/2010

The US had average attendance of just under 69,000

Just out of interest :

South African stadiums
Clipboard0160.jpg

Average capacity : 57,465 (not factoring in weighting for number of games played in each)

American stadiums
Clipboard0216.jpg

Average capacity : 68,968

They do have a population of over 300 million...

Compared to other world cup hosts in recent times :

Germany 81,000,000
Korea Republic/Japan about 180,000,000 combined
France 65,000,000
Italy 60,000,000
Mexico 107,000,000

So I'd say a pretty darn good showing by SA with a population of around 49,000,000

Well well well - looks like Visa are understating a little (and by a little, I mean a schitload) based on those figures...

It's LacelotSA - I wouldn't expect anything else from him.

I thought it was a valid question though.

Oh, don't come in her playing the innocent nun... your panties are down around your ankles for all to see!

Besides I provided valid answers to your valid question but of course they are of little interest to you as getting an answer was never your intention!

Take your meds Lancelot. It was a simple question. Only a psycho would read as much into it as you.

America wasn't the best supported world cup for a number of reasons.

I will say that the stadiums here have looked full for all the games which is a good thing to see.

Ok I didn't read the article because I just woke up now :p but I can say that these guys that are here are spending in bucketloads!!!!

Quite a few of our branches are reporting turnover figures of around R15mil a day, its unheard of.

The last time brazil were in ellis park, 3 brazilian guys walked into the reebok store in the mall where I work and blew R40k on clothing for their whole family, wimpy waiters are getting tipped with $100 bills  so I think that while the figures were cut from over 500 000 people, the ones who did come are bloody rich!
