I've been saying this to you for ages, you need to learn to lighten up a little and try to adopt an inkling of a sense of humour on the forum. You're far too highly strung. Go see a movie, or attend the opera or something. We can do that in SA, you know?

I assure you I'm having fun. Just note that I never post things like "I hate to agree with you but" or "it feels dirty to agree with you" etc. You allude to something - like I'm some sort of demon or something - some nasty person you shouldn't be agreeing with but you force yourself to.... lighten up and just agree. Don't judge the person.
You agree - fine. You disagree - fine too.

You said there is nothing. You then change it to less than European cities. You then change it again to only a few chosen cultural activities that suit you and ignore the others in your list. Don't even bother taking DJs advice of learning to say you are wrong, rather just move along!

But you were saying earlier that it's more expensive for South Africans travelling abroad than tourists travelling here? Are you changing your tune or shifting the goalposts? I can't decide which one.
Your argument was that foreigners won't attend matches where their teams are not playing. I'm saying that's hogwash and I know of plenty who are doing exactly that. I also know that the die-hard fans will leave, irrespective of what country they were in. It's not South Africa's lack of abundance in gay-bars that's likely to send Portugal supporters packing for home. And those who have booked for a certain duration aren't likely to cut it short because their team is out of the world cup. People didn't come to South Africa just to watch football - this is far bigger than just football to them, it is a holiday, a cultural experience, a chance to see the big 5 in the wild, a chance to visit the rest of Africa, a chance to visit our cities they haven't yet seen, a chance to meet new people, create new friendships. It's no different to any other holiday one might take. Just because the football was the instigator, doesn't mean it will be the deterring factor...
You should know by now that I do. I poked fun at your expense and I'm more than capable of handling it being given back at me. Don't take it so personally Peter. I probably do it because I tend to disagree with the majority of what you post. Apart from medical related threads (no, not WC threads that you turn into a dig about our healthcare system - no no). Stop taking the internet so seriously - it's bad for your health, mkay...
I know this was directed at Lance, but being in JHB I feel qualified to comment. There is an abundance by the by. I have never seen so many venues invest in bringing out international acts (clubs like Truth have gone all out in this respect); I have never seen so many entertainment venues investing in promoting SA comedians, singers, bands etc; Monte Casino, Emperor's Palace and a few other places have live entertainment now every day and night; the fan parks have amazing entertainment, particularly The International Football Village at Birchwood; pubs are hiring live entertainers and making an event out of it; restaurants are going all out to promote themselves during this time. And let's not forget the cinemas who are punting 3D football, movies and those in casinos are punting their live shows and selling them as combos too. We want people to have a good time.
To put this into perspective, I know a Dutch guy who works for Fifa - he does quality control for VIP Fifa delegates and players - he has travelled the world doing this and he says he has had the best time of his career so far in South Africa.He's 29, so night-life is his thing. He spends an absolute fortune when he goes out, he thinks it's cheap and he also thinks JHB is one of the finest places in the world to enjoy nightlife. Similar things have been said by the tourists I've met up with or know. Aussies, French, Spaniards, plenty of Argentinians - they've all had a blast here in JHB so far and can't get enough of it...
Why argue with people who wanted this to fail. Lets just go out with a bang and let the grinch's prey for the worst(which they have been doing for the last 6 years.)

I will attest to this happening in cape town, albeit on a smaller scale, as cpt is obviously a lot smaller. all the tourists (yummy ladies included) have all said they are having the best times of their lives (except maybe those that have left by now)
man, when the dutch invaded cape town, all you saw was giant grins riding a sea of orange. to be fair, I didnt see them the morning after
and best of all, they are back again tomorrow

And Peter, FYI, I stay in Hotels/B&B's every night of the week as I travel around SA, and I manage to find excellent accommodation for under R500 including dinner and breakfast ...all within striking distance of large centres, should I want to go to a soccer match or the Opera or a movie...why do you continue to bash your head against a wall (and probably suffer brain damage) in order to try and disprove such facts?

yes... Peter, irrespective of your points of view about this all, do we really have to hear about it in EVERY World Cup related thread? It seems there's no way anyone can have a discussion about anything vageuly WC related without you repeating the same old tired things and hijacking the thread. I don't even remember what this thread is meant to be about any more
