Because his first response to my simple, honest, highly relevant question was to brand me a pessimist. Then with no reason he ranted about me not even wanting an answer to that question.
It seemed a little irrational and I pointed that out.

It all comes down to alternatives.
What else is there to do in a typical SA city in the evening?
Opera? Nope.
Theatre? Nope.
Ballet? Nope.
Orchestra? Nope.
Cabaret? Nope.
Musical? Nope.
Stand up comedy? Nope.
Casino? Usually nope - one at best.
Good night clubs? Nope.
Good Jazz clubs? Nope.
Late night shopping? Nope.
Street corner cafes? Nope.
Typically there isn't much to do.
Secondly, since most SAs are pretty poor, the chance of attending a world cup overseas are pretty slim - ticket to Germany/Japan/USA would be very expensive, plus hotel and food costs plus tickets.... prolly R50-100K per person to see a foreign world cup.
Finally most SAns are gullible and fall for government hype. I mean this is entirely self-explanatory. Look at our elections - no coalitions, no close victories, no run offs, no split parliament vs senate vs presidency issues.... nope.
If the WC is the best thing evar!!!!1 it is! And people will go. Marketing-shmarketing - this is the big Mundial here! We have foreigners - they will entertain us with their quirky ways and we can feel like New York or Paris and be COSMOPOLITAN!!!1 as if people anywhere care. Do we care how warm people in Korea or Germany are? I doubt most here actually looked at those aspects when judging past sporting events hosted in those places.
Anecdotal feedback - every foreigner I know who has watched the WC on telly has moaned about the vuvus. Did any of them comment on the imagery of green/yellow South Africans happy about the cup? Nope. I mean just watch Big Brother or any live concert and you'll see happy people - pulling faces to the camera, waving etc. This is pretty much a human thing and we all do it - to think we are special because of this is only something a country bumpkin would think.

First of all I think the immediate response to this, and the one it deserves, is WTF? Then I should rather go and watch reruns of 7de Laan and not bother responding but what the hell!
So let me see. Shall we use my home city as an example? It had seen the third best attendances of the world cup (with the two cities showing the highest attendance percentages actually having more to offer in terms of cultural events ie CT and Joburg) but I'll mark an X next to the things offered from the list above.

I can try and construe some relevance to this topic but it'd be nicer if you would just spit it out.

Hmm, I'm wondering how this explains multiple people on Facebook asking if anyone knows how they can get tickets to more games after attending their first. You'd think they would see through the hype after being "caught out" once already

Look the WC is great, it's just a pity that our education, health, police, infrastructure, justice, etc are so badly off. For me there are priorities - but then again I lived to see people suffer - ones who waited in their own blood and vomit for an ambulance to take them 10km across town for hours on end- etc etc.
As for birds of a feather - well - I actually like the vuvu! I sent a tiny vuvu to a number of people overseas. Just that they hate the sound on TV.

EDIT : And before the knight in shining armour boys come running in here claiming I am being insulting, feel free to search for the number of times Peter has raised this exact same point and how many times it has been responded to with quotes of budget expenditures, percentages of GDP and whatever other facts could be thrown at him!

Look Lance - you're not affected by that stuff because you didn't see it - so no problems. If you have a drop of humanity in you, you'd be repulsed. But hey I you just weren't there.
BTW my points why local attendance of the WC was so high are pretty valid.
1. Hype. Did you watch the TV ads for FIFA 2010?
2. Cost of going to a future cup - if you live in a WC city - it's peanuts in comparison to going to the 2014 CUP.
3. There really is less to do in SA in terms of evening entertainment. Have you been to NY, Paris, or Berlin? You could catch theatres, operas, night clubs, late night shopping, restaurants, cafes (street corner -
, symphony orchestra concerts etc etc. In a typical SA town you can go to the mall or one or two night clubs. We don't excel in those things. Anyway, go watch the football. Just realise that people elsewhere eg Berlin or Tokyo the WC wasn't such a big deal as it was for South Africans hence maybe fewer locals attended. It's similar with elections- do you know how low the turnouts are for elections in the EU? People are petty apathetic and skeptical.

BTW you misunderstood.
I said that overseas people have more to do in the evening in the BIG cities than we have in our BIG cities. Hence, when the WC comes people will find alternative things to go to. In SA the WC is HUGE! And of course they had WCs before - hence the analogy with the elections - they've had free elections since 1945 - we only since 94.

The WC was not as big a deal for ordinary residents of European hosting countries as it was for our ordinary residents. By ordinary I don't mean football fanatics. Chances are many would prefer to watch their own team too instead of some foreign team - most England fans would not go to games between Brazil and Germany for example. Anyway.... SA is just joining the world community, the others have been the world community for ages.
It feels a little dirty, but I'm gonna have to agree with Peter here about there being fewer entertainment options in SA than in the likes of Paris, Milan, London, New York etc. However all that will change is that in SA where have 2 pubs/clubs Milan might have had 6. We'll still do the same amount of business, just with a different a density, so to speak. We do however have plenty of night-life entertainment in the major cities, just not as accomplished or with as much aplomb as other 1st world major cities...
Whoa now that I know to be a bit of hogwash. Every tourist I've met and many of the overseas guys I know who are here at the moment are attending games even where their country is not involved. The fact that 50% of international tickets were sold to Americans and English fans is evidence of this. Also remember that this stage of the tournament was more expensive and the teams were not guaranteed...
Do you not think that you are being prejudiced here? You hate to agree with me? Hmm......anyway why even say that? Why put your ego in the discussion - who cares what you hate or love - if it's so painful to agree with me - don't.
It's not hogwash. In SA we have a different situation for these foreigners than if they were at home. The air ticket cost a fortune. The hotel costs a fortune. If your team loses what are you gonna do - catch an earlier flight and pay penalties? Cancel the hotel and lose out?

You are free to agree with that sentiment, however, at the same time you need to acknowledge that his initial argument did not state that there were fewer entertainment options in SA cities but rather implied that there were none! He only changed it to "more to do" in overseas cities after I responded that he was talking garbage.
I implied there were fewer and not none. How many good symphonic orchestras in Cape Town? None.
How many good operas on at the moment? none.
Etc.
We occasionally get something in Nico Malan or whatever it is called now but it is pitiful when compared what you can watch in big European cities.
It's also nice to see the peer pressure letting up. Now that DJ agreed with me, Lance is able to agree with me - although he nitpicks some points. Guys think as individuals. Do you think I care what others think? Nope. Freedom of speech.
