Think we need to have an update on all the players leaving us for greener pastures this year and after the RWC.

The latest is:

Gary Botha – Harlequins (after WC) 3 Years
Brent Russell – Saracens (immediately) ?? Years

A lot more, but not sure on the facts right now… :o

Feel free to add any other names. ;)

Looks like quotas probably won't be necessary. They're going to have to find someone to fill all these gaps.

Player exodus a rugby disaster - Verster by Hendrik Cronjé

Posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 23:24

The exodus of top South African players to Europe has reached such dimensions that it can be regarded as a rugby disaster, says Cheetahs boss Harold Verster.
The problem will receive priority status at a Cheetahs board meeting in Bloemfontein on Friday, when representatives of the Free State, Griquas and Griffons unions will discuss the matter.

Verster, who is president of the Free State Rugby Union, said on Wednesday, "I have also asked for the issue to be placed on the agenda for SA Rugby's presidents' council meeting on August 2.

"The exodus of players is a disaster for SA Rugby but little can be done about it at present (because of the rand's weakness against the British pound and the euro)."

Springboks who will play abroad next year include hooker and captain John Smit, locks Victor Matfield and Albert van den Berg, fullback Percy Montgomery, loose forwards Gerrie Britz, Johan Wasserman and Joe van Niekerk, wing Ashwin Willemse, centres De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert, scrumhalf Michael Claassens, flyhalf Butch James and hooker Gary Botha.

The Central (Cheetahs) region has been hit hard as well. On Wednesday, it emerged that Griquas captain and sevens Springbok Gareth Krause will also go abroad.

JOIN THE 'GREAT TREK'

Other Griquas players who have indicated that they will join the 'Great Trek' are scrumhalf Tertius Carse, prop Eugene van Staden, loose forward Jacques Burger and lock Evan Botha.
They have been contracted by French and Italian clubs, as have Free State's Ryno van der Merwe (No 8), lock Corniel van Zyl and wing Philip Burger.

Cheetahs flyhalf Willem de Waal is likely to join French second-division club Narbonne.

Verster has admitted that, because of the money involved, it would be difficult to retain De Waal, who is contracted to Free State until the end of 2008.

However, the contract stipulates that the player may be released if he is offered more money to play for another team.

According to a report on the Narbonne website De Waal will join the club.

Because of what is now seen as a crisis, Verster wants the new Cheetahs Super 14 coach to be appointed as a matter of urgency.

"A new coach could help retain and manage players," he said.

I think its not only about the money but also about politics. With all the quotas etc. people are just trying to secure their future.

And that of their children if they decide to permanently settle.

Exactly, they can set themselves up in terms of assets and residency while they're still playing and then once their rugby careers fizzle out they can go on to whatever else they do. :)

guys if it was not fifa threatiening to pull the world cup away our president would have a document that we need to have x amount of black players in the team but fifa said they would stand for racism

the anc is doing all they can to break up this afrikaans sport

after the world cup i predict our rugby team is finished with all the players going overseas

this quota system will slowly kill off cricket and rugby as players will leave

representing your country used to make them feel proud but i think those days are over

Hi! My name is cyril. I write you from France.
In my rugby team, next year, we will have 9 south-african players!!!
I think that it is a big problem for rugby club in S.A. but it is also worrying for national teams in europe because the young european rugby players don't play the big matchs in their club, so they never progress.

Yes, it is shocking for SA Rugby - we can only wait and see what is implemented (if anything) to stop this.

Some quick research revealed that the average All Black is earning around R1.5m per year. The same player could earn in the UK around R500,000 more. (anyone have actual SA figures?)

Now take the average Football (soccer for some) Players wage in the Premier League is £19,000 per week which is around R15m per year!
(John Terry for Chelsea is getting over R100m per year as being the current highest earning player and this before media endoresments!)

Absolutely correct.

How many blacks do you see in this list.

I suppose all the overseas unions are just racist for not offering our brilliant players of colour contracts.

Must be! How many people are bitching that the players of colour are of equal quality if not better.

These damn overseas racists.

But I supose our exulted minister of sport has succeeded perfectly so far. Netball was a power in the world. Now they brag if they win Malawi.
Watch rugby. Let them play in a third string team and brag if they win Zim.

Viva anc, viva

Why do you think the real good players are leaving.

Firstly, they are really good world class players.
Secondly they are good enough to be in demand and can carry on with their careers anywhere in the world.
Thirdly they are being robbed of a very good income in their country of birth by this countries government.

AA?

True but why not move to other Southern hemisphere countries, where they have no such thing as AA (dbl ) ? 'cause they are all in the same boat - it is all about the MONEY!

Just remember that the NZ players also don't get paid well relatively compared to say Aus or Eng. The guys that are nearly ready for retirement just go for the quick cash before finishing up. It is all just speculation of what will happen next year. I also got upset at first then realised its pointless. I will wait for next year and see what the teams look like. There is quite a lot of new players to still field good teams even after those mentioned leave. This happened to Eng after the last world cup (losing nearly all their players to retirement)

and good luck to those that support Aus and NZ, that is nearly more upsetting than the political situation. That people are so slapgat to support other nations to "prove" something.
