Player exodus a rugby disaster - Verster by Hendrik Cronjé

The exodus of top South African players to Europe has reached such dimensions that it can be regarded as a rugby disaster, says Cheetahs boss Harold Verster.
The problem will receive priority status at a Cheetahs board meeting in Bloemfontein on Friday, when representatives of the Free State, Griquas and Griffons unions will discuss the matter.
Verster, who is president of the Free State Rugby Union, said on Wednesday, "I have also asked for the issue to be placed on the agenda for SA Rugby's presidents' council meeting on August 2.
"The exodus of players is a disaster for SA Rugby but little can be done about it at present (because of the rand's weakness against the British pound and the euro)."
Springboks who will play abroad next year include hooker and captain John Smit, locks Victor Matfield and Albert van den Berg, fullback Percy Montgomery, loose forwards Gerrie Britz, Johan Wasserman and Joe van Niekerk, wing Ashwin Willemse, centres De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert, scrumhalf Michael Claassens, flyhalf Butch James and hooker Gary Botha.
The Central (Cheetahs) region has been hit hard as well. On Wednesday, it emerged that Griquas captain and sevens Springbok Gareth Krause will also go abroad.
JOIN THE 'GREAT TREK'
Other Griquas players who have indicated that they will join the 'Great Trek' are scrumhalf Tertius Carse, prop Eugene van Staden, loose forward Jacques Burger and lock Evan Botha.
They have been contracted by French and Italian clubs, as have Free State's Ryno van der Merwe (No 8), lock Corniel van Zyl and wing Philip Burger.
Cheetahs flyhalf Willem de Waal is likely to join French second-division club Narbonne.
Verster has admitted that, because of the money involved, it would be difficult to retain De Waal, who is contracted to Free State until the end of 2008.
However, the contract stipulates that the player may be released if he is offered more money to play for another team.
According to a report on the Narbonne website De Waal will join the club.
Because of what is now seen as a crisis, Verster wants the new Cheetahs Super 14 coach to be appointed as a matter of urgency.
"A new coach could help retain and manage players," he said.
