About 45% of South Africans depend on govt grants to survive, costing taxpayer R250bn per year

It's insane to think out of 100 people you would see in the street... 45 of them are on grants.

At least they got BEE!!!

And more (not sure why SABC is saying 40% vs 45% on news24 lol)

The number of South Africans relying on social grants has increased to 40.1% in 2025, totalling 25.4 million individuals. This is according to the latest General Household Survey released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

The data also shows that the country’s official unemployment rate rose to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2025.

Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke says the data reflect a steady rise in social grant dependence over the years.

“The percentage of individuals that benefitted from social grants increased steadily from 12.8% in 2003 to approximately 31% between 2017 and 2019 before increasing to 40.1% in 2024… pensions sitting at 2.2 percent,” says Maluleke.
The number of people are just increasing every year on grants.

Need more BEE. Who needs jobs

I wish someone would list how many real jobs contributing to growth there still are in South Africa. So no car guards domestic workers government workers etc.
It must be a scary number.

Good on the police for this, the justice system absolutely failed Olorato, and questions need to be asked of the judge who granted bail.

The whole bail thing definitely needs a revisit in this country, seems to easy for it to be granted.
If you had an opportunity to give suggestions on changing the rules under which bail can be given what would you say?

I am asking because people here looked at me funny when I mentioned that sometimes the law should not be fair to be effective, it should be slightly biased against the accused, despite the assumption of not being guilty before the trial.

Simple answer, I dunno.

More complicated answer is it will entirely depend on the situation, but arresting a person who is suspected of kidnapping and robbing 2 women 6 days later on bail feels very very off to me, would want to know the details around it.

Bail needs to be fair to be effective, but it mustn't also be so easy as to fail the citizens at almost every turn.
