A commission into the rot plaguing the SAPS is necessary as long as they dont order whitewash. There more political the problem the more likely they order a white wash. Or just making some superficial changes to paper over the obvious rot like they did with intelligence.

I think such a commission will end up like the Harms Commission of the late 80s/early 90s.

Where the SAPS and ANC politicians will clean house and sabotage the commission, just like the Security Police and co cleaned house without De Klerk's knowledge.

So the criticism against a commission is fine, totally nothing wrong with seeing things differently, my question is still the same as the previous time, if a commission is so useless, what is the alternative? You mentioned the ID being the one taking the moral high ground and investigating the claims, but the same ID is implicated by Mkhwanazi in the mess.

So totally cool If you think a commission is useless, what would you do if you were the President?
 
A DA candidate running for a ward on the West Coast claims that Gayton McKenzie's Patriotic Alliance (PA) has approached him to withdraw his candidacy from the upcoming by-election. This would leave the DA without a candidate at the last minute.

Rhime Laubscher, the DA's candidate for ward 6 of the Berg River municipality (Aurora, Noordhoek and Dwarskersbos), claims that a PA representative approached him for "negotiations" on McKenzie's behalf. He believes the purpose of the conversation was to entice him to let the DA down.

“These so-called negotiations were nothing more than a deliberate attempt to leave the DA without a candidate in the by-election (on July 23),” says Laubscher, who was the ward councillor for the PA from 2021 to 2023. He swapped the PA for the DA in 2023.

“I turned it down with dignity and out of principle and immediately informed the DA leadership,” he says.

The PA denies the allegation and describes it as a “cheap political ploy”.

This is not the first time that the DA has alleged that McKenzie and the PA are trying to bribe DA candidates to withdraw their participation just days before a by-election.

Rapport reported in June 2023 that Randell Markgraaff, the DA's candidate in ward 7 (Ennerdale) in Johannesburg, had withdrawn his candidacy for a by-election later that month.

At the time, the DA claimed that Markgraaff had been offered money to do so. Both Markgraaff and McKenzie denied this at the time.

In April 2024, a few months before the general election, Rapport revealed how McKenzie had tried to convince a DA councillor from Saldanha Bay on the West Coast to resign with the promise of a mayoralty job, business opportunities and financial guarantees.

McKenzie also boasted to the councillor that he had previously convinced DA councillors to walk by paying for health fund instalments.

This evidence is all contained in a recording that the councillor made and provided to Rapport on condition of anonymity. The PA claimed at the time that the councillor wanted to blackmail them with the recording, and added that there was nothing illegal about their actions.

In the recording, McKenzie said that Saldanha Bay, a neighbouring municipality of Berg River, was his “new target”.

“I don’t want to waste time. It’s not about PA or DA for me, it’s about a coloured mayor. I’m not worried about party politics. As long as it’s a coloured man or a coloured face in charge. I have nothing against black people, but we have a lot of black mayors,” McKenzie added.

Both McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, and John Steenhuisen, DA leader and Minister of Agriculture, visited Ward 6 of the Berg River Municipality this past week to canvass votes.

The DA currently governs with a majority of two seats in this council. If they lose Ward 6, this majority will be reduced to just one seat.

Why many people are rolling their eyes is about what happened with the Zondo Commission; nothing has come from its recommendations. With nil will from ANC.

If I were Rama, fire him until he's proven innocent. Perhaps deploy the SIU to look into this.
Or even better, clean house, disband SAPS and devolve policing to the provinces and rebuild the police.

Have you figured out yet that the PA takes a lot of the ANC vote as well in the rural WC? Do you know the DA won a plurality of the vote in every WC municipality last year? The DA is a far stronger position than the ANC in the WC.

Yup, the PA does that alot in rural WC. They did it last year in one by-election - all to create a false impression of the popularity (or not) of the PA. These smaller parties require momentum etc. so more people vote for them.

But why do DA people fall for the PA's charms? What does it say about the DA's recruitment and the quality of their candidates?

It means if it isn't the PA they would be very susceptible to accepting bribes as councillors.

I have figured out that the PA has been taking wards from the DA like it's going out of fashion.

Right Champy. How would you figure at the interview stage whether someone is likely to accept a bribe or not? They are definitely not going to admit to something like that so I'm interested in your answer. Let's also assume they've passed the standard background check and nothing has come up suggesting any inclination towards criminality...

Subject them to a lie detector test and see if they are able to listen to their conscience.
