Even a majority of ANC voters say they would like to see Helen Zille as mayor of Johannesburg.

A new poll by the Social Research Foundation (SRF) shows that 60% of eligible voters who participated in it support Zille’s candidacy for the mayoralty of Johannesburg. In September, the DA nominated Zille, chairperson of the DA’s federal council, as their mayoral candidate for the City of Gold.

The SRF poll was conducted by telephone from 27 October to 14 November among 1 002 demographically representative registered voters. It was adjusted for a voter turnout of 53% (in 2024, the turnout was 58.6%), has a margin of error of 4% and was first reported by The Common Sense.

While almost 90% of DA voters, according to the SRF poll, predictably support Zille's candidacy, a total of 50% of ANC voters are also positive about the former Cape Town mayor's candidacy.

Only 44% of ANC voters are opposed to it.

About 41% of EFF voters support Zille's candidacy, while 53% oppose it. 41% of MK voters also support Zille, while 52% do not approve of her candidacy.

Among black voters, 51% of respondents support Zille's candidacy, while 87% of coloured voters support her. Among white voters, Zille has the support of 85% of respondents and among Indian voters, 66% support her.

Gabriel Makin, research director of the SRF, points out that the poll focused on the support of all South Africans, and not just those of Johannesburg residents. This data cannot therefore be used to conclude that Zille is the favourite to become the mayor of Johannesburg.

In addition, other major parties, such as the ANC, have not yet announced their candidate.

Rapport reported in October that Zille's candidacy forces the ANC to break with tradition and also nominate a high-profile candidate for the position.

The ANC does not traditionally nominate mayoral candidates. The person who occupies the first place on the ANC's candidate list of proportional councillors usually becomes the party's de facto candidate.

Although the ANC has not yet submitted any names for a mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Rapport understands that ANC MPs and even deputy ministers are being looked at.

In addition to the ANC and the DA, ActionSA is also looking for a high-profile candidate to be its mayoral candidate for the municipal elections, which will take place in November next year.

Herman Mashaba, ActionSA leader, is reportedly considering putting his name in the running if the party does not find a more suitable candidate.

Mashaba was mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019 when he was still a member of the DA.
Even the cadres want the Gogo. Mind, the SRF had the most accurate polling for last year's elections...

Do it, I dare you.

OK, you tell me which SA politicians pictured are fat:

Lots more for you.

Sure, the ANC is shite, but DA WHYTES have sabotaged the state, not ANC. THOSE BLOODY WHYTES.

I can't cope with such retardation anymore.
Lol.. that is some serious mental gymnastics.

I do love how whites still "control" the country and ANC after 40 years.... time to get another conspiracy theory this one is old.

Firstly, I think you are deranged if you believe this. They most certainly do mean it literally. It was meant literally when it was sang during apartheid as a struggle song, and it’s meant literally now. Whether the person singing it actually plans to action it, is up for debate, but not the meaning or intent.

With regards to context and not meaning things literally, you do realise Penny Sparrow also didn’t literally think the people she was referring to as monkeys where literally monkeys, it was nuanced, said within a context of uncivilised behaviour, and most definately not meant literally. So why the double standard?

Exactly. No amount of theatrics from Cyril and co has any impact on the realities. The next meeting takes place in the USA, they will take over the presidency from Sunday, with or without a ceremony. Nothing changes, and Cyril the daft puppet is far too inept to realise just how badly he is being played in this 4D geopolitical chess game.

The US is the most advanced and still the largest economy and the most powerful country in the world. It is member of the G7 and G20 and it also has numerous bilateral and multilateral relationships with almost every country and bloc out there.

To say that SA will make a joint declaration at the G20 when SA is not even a G20 economy, SA is no 33 or 38 depending how you count and has no clout in the world, is nonsense. SA was invited to G20 as a privilege. If we scoff at it and continue to insult the Americans we will be ejected from it. Whether SA is in or isn't in the G20 is irrelevant because the G20 has no binding power. It's a d1ck swinging contest to show off prestige but everyone knows SA is in the G20 out of pity as SA is not in the top 20 of economies and other countries would like to take SA's place, for the same sort of prestige. And that's all it is, it offers no benefits. Nobody will pick SA to invest in over a richer, safer country with a bigger economy because SA is in the G20 and those countries which matter more are not directly represented in the G20. LOL.

SA also wants poorer countries who are recipients of developed country aid to have more say in the aid. That's ridiculous. The beneficiaries can't have a say as they are not paying the aid money. They don't need to take the aid money either. Nobody is forcing them to.

I beg to differ. The bigger picture going on here is that South Africa and indeed the rest of the non western world have come to realise in no uncertain terms that are and always will be regarded/treated as 2nd class by the likes of Trump.

LOL. But these countries behave in a way which leads to this. We don't treat the US with respect. What do you expect? Why do you want special treatment?

They know that their futures depend on corporation with each other, rather than bowing down to western masters.

Nobody has ever stopped them from 'co-operating' with one another. But if you think they value each other over the aid, money and tech/science the developed world can provide, you are mistaken. Why do so many anti-Western elites drive Western cars?

Increasingly, nobody is going to GAF what America wants or says. Btw, you might have come across frequent use of the term racist bullies......true or not Trump certainly hasn't done anything that shows otherwise , especially when it comes to Africa

They still want American money. And American medical research saves lives of people in Third world countries, every day. It's rich to rubbish that given the aid the Yanks provided to America meanwhile the local elites buy BMWs for themselves.

So don't keep getting surprised or shocked by SA government's defiance. Treat people with disrespect and contempt then expect similar!!

Why would anyone be surprised by a government which is losing more and more popular support and which has led to the depreciation of so much in SA? And what of the racist laws on the books in SA?

Welp, that's embarrassing. I still say this is just a factional battle playing out.
Indeed it is, both this and the firing of Dion George.

Unfortunately for Steenhuisen it looks like George has the upper hand as far having the media in your corner is concerned.

Add me to that list. I gained 5kg jn the past 5 year. Sadly, I don't have a tummy to prove it.

On a serious note, I was hoping you'd show us a before and after image of these people. I've never seen a skinny Naledi Pandor or Zuma. A well-sculptured Mantashe? Never seen it. You missed an opportunity to use Dr. Blade, Manamela and several others.

Same SRF that said the DA was going to get over 31% before the 2024 election?

You are being very selective as per usual. The SRF ran a daily poll tracker up until the day of the election and were fairly accurate for all the big parties.
