I didn't actually steal my flat, but Lexity and his Cape exit crowd would probably say that I depress WC wages, drive up provincial unemployment and housing costs.

Basically yeah, although I'm fascinated by that slighter darker hue in one of the municipalities in the Independent Republic (Western Cape). The blacks in the WC are overwhelmingly Xhosa speaking. I would think Zulus comprise less than 0.5 percent of the WC population.

I think that might have more to do with ward boundaries than a significant MK vote share, unless you're talking about one of the rural areas, and then well there has been significant mixing of the Zulu and Xhosa peoples over the decades so its not unthinkable that a Zulu family moved that side decades ago and still has much of its tribal structures in place after spreading out in an area.

Ah you're right - it is ward boundaries not municipalities so yeah, makes sense. I was mentally going through the list of municipalities in the WC where there'd be a highish share of MK but couldn't think of any! A small but concentrated group of Zulu speakers can definitely lead to a high MK vote share in a ward or two.
 
After a month of no by-elections, we return with a few bangers! It will be one of the few sets of by-elections where the ANC will play no significant part! We begin in Tshwane where the DA should easily hold on. Curiously as Gareth Van Onselen points out, Action SA again do not participate in a Tshwane by-election. For a miniscule party, they really should be competing in these type of by-elections to gain visibility but alas, they seem to be scared of voters.

In George we have two very competitive by-elections. The Minister of Agriculture and DA leader has been campaigning (and here) in George recently, which suggests the DA are putting in a lot of effort to hold these wards. I'm not sure what will be enough to hold off the PA train, however, especially in Ward 17. They have a bit more to work with in Ward 27, so let's wait and see.
