The DA says ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa’s praise of DA-led municipalities has boosted its support base, with nearly 100 new members welcomed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, over the weekend.

Embraced by the DA Metro region and Khayelitsha 2 constituency leadership, the new members cited service delivery as their primary motivation for crossing the floor.

“I was an ANC member and decided to quit and join the DA,” said Phumlani Dlongwana from Makhaza. “From the [Jacob] Zuma years up until now, the ANC has been on a self-destructive route and can never be rescued.”

Another new DA member, Zanele Mvumvu, said ANC councillors are invisible when the community needs them. “For years, people of Khayelitsha trusted the ANC, but what have they done for us? Nothing. The DA is trying to reverse the damage.”


DA Cape Metro chairperson JP Smith said momentum was growing, as “DA good governance attracts more and more recognition, not least because President Ramaphosa endorsed it last week”.

“Our track record speaks volumes,” he said. “We care, we deliver and we work for you – and we will not stop.”

Ramaphosa told ANC councillors last week that they should learn from DA-led municipalities such as Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

“We need to be moving up the ladder of being good at what we do. We cannot forever stay at the bottom,” he said.


But ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe, speaking in Cape Town this past weekend, pushed back: “The DA is doing well in white suburbs. It is neglecting townships. That is the myth of their way of governing.”

Mantashe was in the Western Cape over the weekend to launch a campaign in the Dullah Omar region titled “Tackling the High Cost of Living”.

The campaign follows the ANC national leadership’s announcement of plans to restructure its Western Cape branches after a high-stakes intervention in the province ahead of the 2026 municipal elections.

This was the view of ANC Youth League president Collen Malatji on Friday, just moments before the Madlanga Commission heard how former minister of police Bheki Cele had been in contact with attempted murder accused Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, as reported by News24.

Other ANC politicians who were named during KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s testimony at the commission of inquiry so far include Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is on garden leave, and former minister Nathi Mthethwa.

Mthethwa is the latest politician to be implicated in the commission. He has been accused of political interference during his time as police minister in 2012.


Mchunu has so far denied the allegations.

The commission is probing allegations that cartels and criminal underworld figures have infiltrated South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Malatji said the ANC could no longer afford to protect people accused of corruption.

“We’re not going to associate ourselves with criminals. If you are implicated in the Madlanga Commission and it’s proven that you have done criminal activities, you’re not our comrade, you don’t deserve to have membership in the ANC.


“Anyone else who is accused must go and prove that they are not guilty. If they are found guilty, they must immediately vacate the African National Congress,” Malatji said.

He said the ANC’s step-aside policy was clear on how ANC members who are charged for wrongdoing must proceed.

“The ANC no longer associates itself with criminals. When was the last time you saw comrades of the ANC supporting others in court? You will never see that thing now.

“If you’re arrested for a crime, you go to court alone and you cry alone in front of cameras; we will not be there with you,” Malatji said, adding that the ANC does not send people to steal.

“Everyone, even myself, if I’m arrested, I can’t expect the ANC Youth League to be dragged into court cases. The country and the ANC can no longer afford to be associated with corruption.

“If you believe that you are innocent, you really have to face the music alone. Unfortunately, we have arrived at that stage,” Malatji said.

What is the ANC’s election strategy for the 26/7 LGE? All I’ve seen is painful moaning and crying about the DA’s candidates. Do you have your own candidates with a successful track record at governing at the local level?

I assure you that the free publicity for the DA’s candidates is not a winning formula
