Figured you would clarify :)

I was merely conveying what was in the article, not that any media outlet can be trusted to get things right when it comes to DA BAD these days.

It seemed like a very strange thing to put right at the end of the article as if they wanted to make sure everyone read it and got incensed.

media & politics is a circus.
you really have to read the whole lot, from the extreme left to the extreme right to try make sense of the perpetual schitstorms.
each news outlet has an agenda, and they play their readerships like a finely tuned fiddle.
and then of course you have the politicians . . . .

picture the scene - a year end party comprising used car salesmen, lawyers & timeshare sales ppl !!

No questions what so ever on that front, though our media does love to wear its bias on its sleeve. Its pretty easy to see which way they lean if you just step back a little bit.

Doesn't seem that misleading although they should have maybe specified primary




As of late 2025, the operational status of the primary manganese smelters is as follows:
  • Transalloys: This eMalahleni-based company operates the country's sole remaining silico-manganese (SiMn) smelter that is currently producing, although it is struggling to sustain operations and has issued retrenchment notices due to power prices.
  • Assmang's Cato Ridge Works: This was South Africa's only remaining ferro-manganese (FeMn) smelter in operation after Metalloys closed, but Assmang announced plans for its permanent closure in mid-2025, citing weak market conditions and rising electricity costs.
  • Metalloys (now Khwelamet): Previously the largest global producer of ferromanganese, this facility near Meyerton was placed on care and maintenance in 2020. It has been acquired by Menar, which is in the process of finalizing the acquisition and intends to revive the smelter complex. The restart could bring at least two of the four furnaces back into operation, with progress anticipated by late 2025/early 2026.
