SA Post Office Strike

What do you think that cartoon portrays?

Its a CARTOON, the inference you made applies to your mindset only it seems. I took from it that they are so useless and always on strike that nobody notices when they are striking or not striking. You made quite the leap there, but yeah, make of it what you will.

Yep I agree. Very big leap.

The snails face is priceless :D It the exact same expression that generally meets you when you go to the PO counter.

That's false. The whole premise of the cartoon is a lie, because quite obviously and it can be empirically proven that people are impacted by the strike and so have noticed that it is occurring. Take the people on this forum for example, or UNISA students who can't get their assignments, or pensioners who can't get their meds, or direct marketers, or the 1000s of small businesses which are complaining about the strike -- some had to close shop, and even large businesses such as Kalahari -- (you can even search for posts by MagicDude4Eva about how this has impacted BOB sellers, all of these people can tell that there is a strike on. Now Jonatan Shapiro maybe can't tell that, why? Maybe he'd dumb. I doubt it. Or maybe it just hasn't impacted him personally and he hasn't been considerate about thinking about the less privileged people and others who actually use SAPO. Not everyone can afford or use courier and email. :)

The snail bit is probably an allusion to snail mail and the recent comments made by a SAPO exec about how technology is costing them customers. However that's not relevant. What's relevant is that many people, especially people who can't afford courier to deliver their documents or things, have been affected by the strike.

Now this does not make Shapiro a snob (which is what you said). It just makes this cartoon a bit of a joke.

Is it safe to use the postoffice yet? Speedservices couriers to be exact?

Good question. Depends largely on where you are and where you're sending your stuff. Cape Town seems to have a decent service and now they're bypassing JIMC for much of the incoming stuff. I got normal letter post in my mailbox today.

Lyttelton Post Office was closed today, with nothing in the boxes, BUT a postman was in our road presumably delivering mail.

If I am perfectly honest, despite having a few items somewhere in the mail system, I hope the whole SAPO gets closed down, everyone gets fired and all traces of SAPO gets wiped off the face of the earth.

To hell with the post office use alternates, just like for security, don't use the Police, use pvt companies, heck even the Police do ;) .

Although down here in CT things tend to be quite good. But I am still confused how royal mail manages to (most of the time) get to me before sapo mail from JHB reaches me.

You're honestly going to tell me that nobody has noticed that there is a postal strike on, or will you just redefine what notice means? Shapiro's cartoon is not based on reality.

They tend to be quite good. Except for the first time since I can remember, since this strike started we've had no mail delivery, something which normally occurs daily. It's better since last week but before that we've had no mail for about 4-5 weeks or so. International deliveries are delayed as never before. As was EMS international. So Shapiro is mistaken or he's a liar.

As mentioned elsewhere, Royal Mail sucks. I've had parcels from Russia arrive faster than Royal Mail. And their tracking sucks. If you want a more efficient postal service quote Japan Post. Stuff is posted one day, next day is at the outgoing office to be sent that day on a plane, out of the country that evening, or early hours the following day (for ordinary airmail). And their tracking at least for the domestic arm is detailed and fast. Royal Mail has a lot to learn.

Can't use alternatives because some companies only use EMS. They have no alternative. And they don't ship to reseller addresses in their own country. If you complain they apologise and tell you to suck it up and that it's impossible to send to a domestic address.

Speed services counter to counter works perfectly. Used them last week.
Doesnt work nationally, anything routed via jhb wont arrive, still waiting for a parcel shipped last month via speedservices, stuck somewhere in route, so no, dont use speedservices
