SA Post Office vs Couriers - Pricing showdown

I think Mybroadband missed an opportunity to compare a number of parcel sending options.

First of all there are a number of options based on speed. Next day, 3 -5 days and up to 7 days.

Other parcel sending services like Pep Paxi, Pargo, DSV PAKe containers and then the store 2 door coueries like RAM and Aramex.

Meaningless comparison as SAPO is not a viable option for parcels (or for anything really) IMHO. You also have to add the cost for the time of standing for an hour and a half in a queue to collect a parcel before giving up, as I did on Saturday.

**** the PO.. Had to pay R200 for an item i paid R100 for lol.. told them to GTFOH

@rpm can you adjust the prices to take delivery success rates into account?

For example, sending a 5kg package worth R1000 via the post office costs R1094.35

I use Aramex and Postnet mainly for courier services in South Africa. Paxi is distant third.

If you want to use another very reliable courier I can really recommend DSV PAKe at Engen service stations. Very reliable and affordable next day or 2 day courier.

Aramex at PnP is really good too.

I recommend an article about international parcel sending. Local sending paints them in a poor light, and it's probably deserved, but otherwise, for international sending, they are the only people who take my money and deliver. I had endless **** trying to send something small back to the US. I have tried:

* Courierguy - I was lead to believe that I was creating an account I could login and request a quote / pickup when filling in the form on the website. When I submitted the form, I got a lovely "someone will contact you" followed by a phone call. So that form was actually for creating a business account.
* Fedex: Need a business account. At least they are upfront about it.
* DHL: Same, but at least you can get a quote
* Dawnwing: Same as above
* TNT: Website is useless. The online quoting system errors at the end. After mailing them and complaining, all the person at the other end does is forward the mail to someone else internally, copying me, and that's the last I hear. Useless company.
* Aramex: I was lead on here. I am summarizing by quite a bit as it took days to figure this out. While you can login and request a pickup, it throws a generic error after typing out all the details of the parcel to request a pickup. Turns out you need a business account. But Aramex did quote the cheapest out of the private couriers, at R380.
* Postnet: I've left the best for last, as they continually remind me that a useless company can be even more useless than previously thought. When I went in the first time, they wanted me to pay R800+ to send something small via DHL. When I recently checked their website, I see that they've partnered with Aramex. Great, I thought - will probably cost around R400 (based on my previous Aramex attempt). NOPE. Still, R800.

And the only place actually willing to take my money was SAPO, at R250. They might be useless in some cases, but twice now, I've had no choice but to use them, at a cheaper cost to me, and the items get delivered.

Well my thoughts on this is it is not a apples vs apples comparison. You can pay R99 to get something delivered or R94.35 to play some kind of weird gambling game where you bet on the outcome of your package being delivered or getting lost.

I have lost enough stuff with the Post Office over the years. They are a black hole that nobody in their right mind should trust. Ever.

I phoned SAPO for a quote for international (A4 envelope) and they said to rather go to Postnet (go figure)

Postnet was R450 for 3 days to Europe. I think they use DHL

Fedex online quoting wouldn't work and the call centre gave me incorrect info on pricing and delivery time.

For various reasons I dropped off at Fedex and it was around R370.

I had the same experience with Postnet - they were the ones who suggested I go to SAPO when I went there the first time. Every time I've gone to SAPO for international shipping, they weigh it and give me a price.

One thing I didn't mention in my rage post about the rest of the couriers was one of them suggested I go to one of their offices or branches if I am not an account holder. I think it was Aramex. But, ain't nobody got time fo dat!

Ii never use post office for shipments, mainly as I would like the parcel to actually get there.
I also walk with a crutch and going to the post office and queuing is a nightmare.
Locally I use Rush.co.za.
They give a couple of options, but it usually boils down to The Courier Guy or Skynet. Whatever cheapest. I pay via my debit card.
Internationally I use Aramex. I email [email protected] with weight, dimensions of parcel and where it's going. She sends me a quotation.
I accept and I receive an email from Peach Payment Services.
I pay using my debit card. A day later an Aramex van comes with a waybill to be filled out and they collect the parcel.
The price quoted is usually identical to here:
aramex.com/ship/check-shipping-rates

Used those Aramex bags many times and no problems. And the delivery is fast.
I have only had one blip with Aramex. But usually, they are super reliable. I even had a shipment to Harding in KZN that got there in 2-3 days.
