SA students shun maths and science degrees

Title is misleading. Its not that students dont want to do Science degrees, they just don't qualify. A BA is probably the only thing they qualified for.
 
I feel sorry for them, when they go to UNI's and Colleges, they will need supplementary courses just to apply. When that workforce hits the market they are going to be overlooked and ignored.

Yes.

They must drop the maths entrance requirement totally, and then make it so that you can graduate as long as you try hard to pass. It doesnt matter if you get 15% for Maths 1, as long as you try hard.

No! That's too difficult.

What we need to is lower the entrance requirements and put pressure on universities to accept these candidates. And they must pass them too.

Ever considered a career in politics? The education department sounds like the place for thinkers of your caliber :)

There is a better solution to the current problem.

Long term: Improve education at school level.

Short-term:
Increase the course by one year, give supplemental requirement subjects that will assist in the mainstream course subjects
Lowering the standard entrance requirements wont help people.

I've been denied access because of my poor school education in maths, but because I was allowed to supplement my maths with pre-courses I was able to finish my 3year B.sc degree in Computer Science Mathematics.

Only problem I see then is how hard the students works from there, I can tell you I had to put in a lot of effort on my part to finish it.

dude, our government is run by a bunch of spineless morons. I wouldnt last two months there... Im too honest and have at least half a brain :o

It would appear having no brain is a requirement, so I wont get in.

You idiots have it all wrong. There is no need for schools, tests or exams! When you turn 18 the government must issue you with a senior certificate, when you turn 22 the government must issue you with a degree of your choice. This thing about schools, working, high standards, excelling are white imperialistic notions brought here by the settlers, we have not been having this stuff before they arrived.

Pity about the country, but one cool side effect is the maths/science career path presents a fantastic career opportunity for those who do qualify.

....as long as you try hard to pass and don't get caught sleeping in lectures more than once a term and your mommy, daddy, granpa or grandma sends you with a letter stating that you trying hard every night at home as well.
