SA telcos embrace online customer service

telkom doesn't know any of this, for sure

Agreed, an example would be nice.

Edit, Telkom does have an online billing system.

Who are the telecoms companies in SA doing this? An example would be nice...

Wellllll, it is not Telkom, and it is not the "yet to appear" SNOT, so it must be the cell operators.:D

Yes Telkom also has an online fault reporting system. Just very sad nobody at Telkom knows about it. My phone line went down a while ago and because of the cost involved having to listen to very bad streaming music when phoning Telkom Faults, i logged the fault on-line. A week later I had to get someone to log the fault via telephone and Telscum had no record of any fault reported.

The online fault reporting tool sends reports directly to their ADSL installation team - which in turn feeds it through a shredder....

I seem to remember Telkom removed this from their site?

No its still there, accessible from their home page navigator on left under fault reporting.

Yeah, but Telkom Efficient (TM) as always:

Please note that this facility is only for normal telephone line faults (voice faults). Data line (non-voice) faults need to be reported to 10217 (all hours). All ADSL faults must be reported to 0800 375 375. For internet faults click here.

Now, I ask with tears in my eyes, if I have internet access, is it not reasonable to assume I also have data line/ ADSL service.

Telkom does have a "pull' EBPP website (as refered to in the article as Customer Self Service).

https://ebpp.telkom.co.za/

Telkom sends you an email each month (not secure or authenticated) and pulls you back to their site to view and pay your invoice (classic phishing scenario).

Vodacom and Cell send email bills (as secure encrypted attachments), pretty much the same info as the paper but you can sort the data in the bill by columns (highest to lowerest call cost or duration) and lets you toggle between private and business to generate a claim form.

To sign up for Vodacom send an email to vodacom @ striata.com or call the call centre and ask for the interactive i-bill.

To sign up for Cell C simply email with your cellphone number in the subject line to ebills @ cellc.co.za

MTN have the edocs customer self service - not sure of how extensive this is yet - goto www.mtn.co.za and register.
