Part of an underwater high-speed fibre-optic cable linking South Africa with the Americas and Europe will be completed by 2009

As I understand it, an entire cable is needed... Getting there I guess.

As I understand it, there are only three companies that lay fiber undersea cables, and as it is there is a backlog. Secondly, it takes a few months to lay one cable, never mind 2. Also bear in that the landing stations also need to be built as well as all the infrastructure that needs to be put in the landing station itself. I think 2009 is actually a very ambitious target

Sounds like they picked 2009 mainly because it is before the 2010 big event, not because it is related to time it would actually take.

Then again one of the companies that lays the cables is owned by NeoTel's parent company VSNL so maybe they'll be more accommodating.

In 2009 we will probably get a new MoC and the cable will most possibly be delayed again
