SAA pilot strike will continue indefinitely

In that case they should just stop waisting their time and go and find another job.
Why though? they are following an accepted course of action.
The unions do it in all other circumstances so why cant the pilots?

That's exactly what the pilots want to do. They're fighting for their retrenchment packages.

We have some of the most spoiled pilots in the world. Do they really need concierge service and 5* accomodation?

But seriously. Lets sack them all. Or they can strike indefinately without pay. Last time I flew with them was 25 years ago and never since. We tried to get my grandmom from JHB to Cape Town via their guided system ie take granny or kids from the terminal into then plane and then from the plane to the people coming to collect her at the arrival space (you then paid almost triple the ticket for that.) Basically my grandmom never got fetched from the plane and got lost in the terminal. After an hour and half search she was found. Never again will we support them.

Oh thats not the worst. During apartheid they tried to carry explosives on the passenger liner for smuggling. The plane crashed after take off. SAA never apologised. We lost an uncle, aunt and cousins.

And what do you propose people that have worked as Pilots for the past possibly ten to twenty years go and do?
You can say that about all the other 1000`s, if not millions, who lost their jobs.

What makes a pilot so special compared to the rest?

It's Africa. You gonna have to be creative to survive here.

So, the capitalists of MyBB are now suddenly in support of these striking pilots? How commie of them.
You realise you do not actually have to pick a side. I care about neither the government nor the pilots. SAA should have been privatised years ago. So yes if you want to apportion blame then yes the commies are to blame.

I didn't realise the airline was flying again.
They flew a single flight for vaccines which was a disaster.

  • Firstly, the ANC gov insisted that an SAA passenger aircraft is flown to Brussels to collect the first batch of COVID19 vaccines.
  • The flight was also to be a demonstration that SAA is still operational
  • This came at great cost to the tax payer as there were several alternatives that government could have used to safely deliver vaccines to South Africa.
  • The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) granted no less than 13 exceptions in order to clear the flight
  • Most of these exemptions are due to the fact that the SA Pilots association is currently locked out and on strike (not 100% sure if it's been declared a stike as there are quite a few technicalities here - but that's a whole other story).
  • Anyway, so they manage to find a pilot and clear him to fly "by any means necessary".
  • The pilot fails to calculate / enter the correct weight into the aircraft computer and take-off weight is off by 90 odd tons, causing the aircraft to stall and the onboard computer kicks into action and saves the aircraft from crashing.
  • The aircraft computer also sends a notification through to the manufacturer to tell them there's a dummy at the controls.
  • The same pilot (after collecting vaccines in Brussels), decides that he's not taking any chances this time and floors it on take-off setting off noise sensors all over Brussels. NOTE: the EU take this kind of stuff VERY seriously.
  • EU authorities are currently investigating and are considering a complete ban of SAA aircraft in their airspace.
  • CAA deny both incidents.
  • CAA are caught out with hard evidence of both incidents

A pilot friend was selling sour doughs during lockdown to make cash... although I think he's got something more solid going on now

Just want to point out that striking airline pilots don't directly affect government services like municipal utilities, vehicle license renewals, home affairs documents, etc, not that these services are working efficiently and effectively anyway when there are no strikes. So supporting or not supporting striking airline pilots actually has little material affect on anyone aside from those directly connected to the pilots and/or the airline, basically no one really cares about striking airline pilots.

You seem to think this is the fault of the SAA pilots? It's most certainly not.

Government should have implemented strict financial controls years ago.
The unions are partly to blame as they didn't care while the bailouts were just readily coming.

So bunch of non-flying pilots are striking? And they think this is an effective strategy?
From what I understand, pilots haven't been paid in over 8 months. They're striking because they want to be officially retrenched.

I get why, what I doubt is the efficacy of their methods.
