I think the DoC guy was a lightweight who drew the short straw...
 
So Paris was caught contradicting himself on the evidence for prices being too high. That should do fine as article number 1 tomorrow.
Number 2 should be getting confirmation on the "new" ADSL price committee.
Numer 3 - why no clarification or action on the ADSL regulations.
Number 4 - If competition is going to solve everything where is the Third National Operator?
Just a couple of thoughts for starters. Maybe we should pick a couple of issues and run follow-up letter or fax blitzes while there is momentum.
 
Great job to RPM and the host of the show... a pity that there wasn't time to get into the meat of the issues, everything seems to have just been skimmed over.

Regarding all the things that ICASA is supposedly doing that nobody's heard a word about, they're like Schroedinger's cat, only popping out of the box every couple of months to say something. There's no accountability for goals not being reached because nobody knows what the goals are in the first place.

I think if they would just tell us what their goals are and give us some kind of timetable it would restore a lot of confidence in them. If they had told us 2 months ago they were working on interconnection, reworking the ADSL regs, etc, none of this would probably have been necessary.

Of course the fact that they continuously refuse to give us ETAs doesn't bode well. Time to start work on those international bandwidth provision alternatives Neotel.

1. ICASA is controlled by the DOC.
2. The DOC, via the government, has 38% share in Telkom and thus gets 38% 0f the dividend payout.
3. The DOC via the government has 40% share in Neotel and thus ...
4. Neotel is 100% dependent on the government's new company started by big ears bolts Erwin and thus will dance the government's tune whenever it is played.

Change requires a will to change.

Now why on earth should we expect any change?

Is it just my imagination, or was Paris wearing a big sign on his forehead that said "Smack me"?

No need to correct you there IC, I agree she did a great job. But seriously just listen to the snippet on the link - forward to the time shown in my post :)
I can tell you that her stuttering was not as a result of being cornered or trying to make a one liner a paragraph, it was apparently a natural flow of words related to the preceding paragraph :D Maybe she was feeling sorry for him... Have a listen... genuine !

Well done, rpm, and thanks to the youtube poster. I just felt angry after watching that clip. The icasa chairman said absolutely nothing worthwhile, only confirming that they have no deadlines, keep setting up strategy groups to investigate matters, the conclusions to which everyone already knows. The doc guy was only marginally better. Who would want to be a spokesman for that department? No deadlines for infraco, denial by icasa that exorbitant teleco costs are being borne by the public, no proof, apparently. My conclusion after watching this is that icasa aren't toothless, they're clueless, and, as can be observed on the clip, lack leadership. I pay over a grand and some change for uncapped, shaped broadband. I must be a mug. On this evidence, i'll remain a mug for some time. :(
 
Heh - sorry to hear about you bandwidth woes IC... ;)

My opinion is that the interviewer did a good job considering she works for SABC... however, I believe this debate warrants a more serious and thorough approach - not a 15 minute slot. Someone missed an opportunity to really tear at the fabric of the doc, icasa and telkom argument.

I am tired of this being an insignificant issue in this country.

I can now clearly understand the woes of broadband and governance in this country after Mbeki's interview and now this Mashile's catastrophe of an "da-bate"
